Another Option Besides VHS

I have a rather compact set up with my tube TV.

It’s a small one on a kitchen ledge, so any physical media player is out of the question here.

But every rendition I’ve seen of an OGTW transfer to VHS has looked perfectly fitting, and I will always support those who take the time to format modern media this way.

With my CRT, there’s a way to achieve something similar. An old Roku I use (which still gets updates) has compatible A/V composite output with these TVs, and so I stream episodes over Jellyfin.

The difference I see with some of these VHS transfers is that they actually compress the original 16:9 widescreen frame into 4:3, the full aspect ratio available in these tapes, and by extension, these TVs.

I apply a batch crop digitally to these episodes and steam those from my PC. You lose some visual information, but in rewatching it this way, I think almost everything important still fits (except some title cards)

Just my setup on an already tried and true tradition for this mythic tale!

An (RG?) Update from PB

My friends,

It is not every day that you have a good day of writing.

On the contrary, I think most days I feel like an absolute Dorkamus Maximus moron… like my taste, such as it is, far exceeds my talent.

But today!

Today was a good day of writing. It was a great day of writing!

Well, let’s say no hats were involved.

But I had a fun day, and I did it…

I owe it all to two dead people: Ralph Waldo Emerson and his essays on self reliance, and Goethe.

It's not every day that someone can say they had a good day because of Goethe.

But I did. And now I'm gonna go listen to Goethe.

30 Greatest Living U.S. Songwriters — NYT

A couple weeks ago, the New York Times published an (intentionally) unordered list of the 30 greatest living American songwriters.

Needless to say which artist I made sure was on the list immediately. Each songwriter has a short bio by a journalist, but this last paragraph about him outshines any other written thing from the piece.

The rest of the list is hit-or-miss for me, so much so that I agree with about 15 out of the 30 choices:

Lucinda Williams
Stevie Wonder
Jay-Z
Paul Simon
Taylor Swift
Brian & Eddie Holland
Missy Elliott
Lionel Richie
Dolly Parton
Young Thug
Diane Warren
Josh Osborne, Brandy Clark, Shane McAnally
Fiona Apple
Babyface
Stephin Merritt
Romeo Santos
Carole King
OutKast
Mariah Carey
Willie Nelson
Kendrick Lamar
Valerie Simpson
Bob Dylan
Lana Del Rey
The-Dream
Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis
Bad Bunny
Bruce Springsteen
Smokey Robinson
