I've never owned a bromeliad before, but someone left this on the curb with a note that said "free but she bites!" and I had to grab it. I noticed on the walk home that the flower stalk and leaves have this powder on them. I wanted to see if that's something normal or a detriment. I'm keeping it separated from my other plants for now. Thanks in advance! (I'm located in Los Angeles, USA if that helps.)

I've had this huernia zebrina for about 12 years now, and in the same terracotta pot for about 1 year. (See why it was repotted a year ago in the next paragraph.) The soil is a mix of potting soil and perlite, about 50/50. This has been the same for about a year. It gets indirect, bright light for about 6 hours of the day and then direct sun for about an hour or two at the end of the day, give or take an hour depending on the season. (I have had it in more sun previously but it began to burn, so I moved it to a more shaded area.) I live in USA zone 10 and the plant stays on my patio year-round. I water it about once every two or three weeks in the summer and once a month or less in the winter. I fertilize in the summer months when watering with liquid succulent fertilizer.

When I went to water it today, I noticed that half the plant was limp and mushy. (See pictures 1-3. This happened about a year or two ago, and I had removed all the mushy parts and replanted the remaining pieces in new soil. All has been well for about a year, and now this has happened again. I had never had any issues with the plant in the previous 10 years before this.

There is no smell to the rotted parts, and they come off easily. It started at the base of the plant, but has not spread yet to the other half. (See last picture of the base of the main plant where I removed the rotted parts.) Edit: the plant is in the midst of flowering, and I'm not sure if that matters. There are currently open flowers on the non-rotted half.

I do not see any bugs on the plant or notice anything big in the soil. I do not want to lose this plant, as it's very special to me and the oldest succulent I have. Does anyone know what is causing this supposedly spontaneous rot and how I can prevent it from happening again?

For card value, I use the TCGPlayer current market value for the condition. For cards without many listings on TCGPlayer, I use ebay average last 5 solds per condition.
