Flight downgrades

Last month I was booked to fly Premium Economy on Singapore Airlines, but when I arrived at the airport the airline said the plane was overbooked and downgraded me to Economy.

They offered compensation in the form of the fare difference between Premium Economy and Economy (on the day of the flight - not at the time of booking), and when I asked if I could wait and take a later flight they claimed those were overbooked too.

There were other passengers on the flight who were also downgraded, and the advice from Singapore Airlines was that passengers who book Business/Premium Economy with them ought to be aware that their seats can be downgraded.

Wanted to post here as I genuinely had no idea this was how they operated, and I wondered if others were aware?
