Feedback before I buy a NAS for offsite backups.
I have a Windows PC at home with around 8TB total storage across multiple drives.
I currently use Macrium to back up my main drive to an external hard drive. Every now and then, I copy that backup onto another drive stored at another house.
I want to stop manually driving hard drives around and I do not want yearly software/cloud fees.
What I want:
- Weekly incremental backups over the internet
- Ability to restore individual files/folders, not just the whole PC
- Full PC restore if needed
- Remote access through something like Tailscale
Recommendation I have been given:
- Synology DS923+
- 1 x 16TB WD Red Plus NAS drive to start
- Use Synology Active Backup for Business
- Use Tailscale for remote access
- Later add another drive if I need more storage or redundancy
The NAS would mainly be for offsite backup. The DS923+ was recommended over a 2-bay model because I may want extra drives later. I may also use it for basic server tasks like running simple Python scripts, but that would just be a bonus rather than the main purpose.
Questions:
- Is the DS923+ overkill for this or is it a good long-term choice?
- Is starting with 1 x 16TB WD Red Plus sensible, or should I buy 18TB/20TB instead?
- Any issues with doing the first backup locally, then moving the NAS offsite and using Tailscale for weekly incrementals?
- Would you use Synology Active Backup for Business for this, or something else?
- Anything else I am missing before I buy?
