Where is the cheapest place to swap out SodaStream canisters?

Hey, I’m moving to Switzerland soon and would like to know what the best and cheapest way is to swap SodaStream canisters. In my country you can swap them out at the bookstore for 7-10 CHF. Was wondering what the realistic prices are in Switzerland and where I can change them. I will be living in Lausanne.

Thanks :)

Do students add furniture to their rooms?

I would like to add some stuff to my student accommodation. What I had in mind are lamps/desk chair/shelves on the walls/posters/ desk accessories/carpet/freezer/curtains and more convenient things like a backboard for my bed. I thought I may as well make it cozy if I'll be living there for 3 years. oh and changing those dreadful white lightbulbs. I was wondering if students in Switzerland tend to do this? Or do they rather just place a few things on their desk and call it a day?

What are your thoughts?
Thanks :)

Absolutely stunning 🤩

Absolutely stunning views over Lac Leman. Taken through a car window while on the highway! Such a lovely sight 🌅

Is a work permit needed for freelance work on Fiverr?

Hey, I’m a student moving to Lausanne soon and for the past few years I’ve been doing freelance work (video editing etc.) via Fiverr or just through email with companies. In my home country there is an income limit after which you have to pay taxes. How does this work in Switzerland? Will I need to get a work permit and how am I supposed to calculate my taxes? Thanks 😄

Is 950 CHF a good price for a studio?

Hey! Today I received an FMEL accommodation offer for a 2 person studio at the new NEOSTAR building in Lausanne. I have 48 hours to respond, and I have a few questions.

- Is 950 CHF a good price for a 19m^2 studio or is it still worth searching for something cheaper?

- Is it safe to sign the lease/contract while the building is still under construction?

- The FMEL reception is closed now and for the weekend, and so I’d like to ask if anyone knows if the end lease date is flexible? I selected 2028 as my end date, but I’d probably like to do one year for now. Is it possible to easily change this and/or extend it later on?

- Any tips when it comes to FMEL would be great! 😊

Thank you 🙏

University of Edinburgh of HEC Lausanne?

Hi there, I’ve just received an offer from the University of Edinburgh for environmental sciences. So far my choice has been HEC Lausanne or UNIGE for economics. I know that Edinburgh is one of the top unis in Europe but I’m not quite sure if it’s really worth paying these bloody extremely high tuition fees? As far as I think Switzerland would be manageable, the UK tuition fees are too much so I’d probably need student loans.

So I’m wondering what your opinions are on these programs? Some people have told me that environmental sciences are good for the future as they are less susceptible to AI. What are your thoughts?

I think it’d be more reasonable to study in Switzerland? I think economics, especially in Switzerland, will be valuable?

Is it possible to travel from Geneva and Lausanne for university each day?

Hey, I would like to study in Lausanne while I’ve potentially found some accommodation in Geneva. I know it takes around 1h by train but I was wondering if public transport there is reliable and if anyone does this daily too?

Edit: Some of you have said Geneva is expensive. Is there a different good city/town to live in which is also fairly accessible from Lausanne but cheaper than Geneva?

Budgeting tips for students?

Hey everyone,

I'm an international student moving from Poland to Switzerland soon. I know the price shock is going to be very real, so I'm trying to figure out my budget early.

I already know about Coop and Migros, but I'm looking for deeper savings. A few quick questions:

- France has "Resto U" for cheap student meals. Is there a Swiss equivalent, or what is the university cafeteria situation like for pricing?

- Are there any specific websites or apps that give genuinely good deals on food and groceries?

- What are your top tips for surviving on a student budget (cheaper supermarkets, transport, phone plans, etc.)?

Thanks in advance for the help 😊

Is UNIL welcoming for foreign students?

Hey there, I’m a student from a different country in the EU and I’m curious about what life is like for us foreigners in Lausanne/UNIL/Switzerland. I speak fluently in English and have a French B2.

Is it difficult to make new friends? I’ve heard Swiss people are less keen than other countries on making friends with foreigners.

I’ve also heard that there are a lot of people from Asia in Lausanne and at UNIL?

HEC Lausanne or KU Leuven for economics?

Hi there, I’ve been offered a place at HEC Lausanne and KU Leuven (Business Administration) in Brussels. These are Bachelor programs.

It’s a really tricky choice for me as both universities are good and they’re similar when it comes to economics. I’d assume HEC Lausanne will have more job opportunities after graduation?

I also think Switzerland is nicer to live in, obviously more expensive but I think Lausanne is a cool place.

What do you guys think?
