I bought a new steering wheel, because I much prefer the look of the rounder M Technik wheel. I tried to install it today, but to my dismay I noticed that the old and new airbags do not seem to be compatible. The old one is single stage, the new one is dual stage.

Question one: Am I right in assuming that nothing can be done about this?

Question two: Does anyone have a single stage airbag for the M Technik wheel (old part number 3322282352, new part number 32342229030) that they would be willing to sell? I am in Germany, so preferably someone in Europe?

Bought an M-Technik steering wheel for my E36. Is it normal that the airbag cover is this flimsy and "bouncy" (for lack of a better term), or is there something wrong with the airbag I bought?

Edit: I rechecked the airbag today and there is no way it was messed with. The plastic cover is riveted to the metal housing in at least ten spots. It would be a monumental undertaking to drill all those rivets out to get the cover off and then reinstall it with new rivets. It is designed in a way that the cover will split down the middle in case of airbag deployment, which is why it feels the way it feels and it also makes it impossible to "repack" a deployed airbag. I am reassured! :)

Ich war für meinen E36 auf der Suche nach einem M-Sportlenkrad als Ersatz für mein Sportlenkrad 2. Finde das M-Lenkrad einfach schöner. Also ab auf Kleinanzeigen und ein brauchbares gefunden. 190 Euro mit Airbag, Zustand sieht brauchbar aus, cool.

Lenkrad kommt an und der Zustand ist dann doch etwas ernüchternder als es auf den Fotos zunächst aussah. Was nun? Sattler liegt nahe, ist mir aber zu teuer. Selbst neu beziehen mit Kit von Ebay will ich auch nicht, der Bezug sieht billig und nicht original aus und das Lenkrad wird dadurch dicker. Schließlich werde ich beim großen A fündig und und erwerbe ein Aufbereitungsset für schwarze Lederlenkräder. Kostenpunkt 35 Euro.

Ab ans Werk! Als Erstes habe ich das Lenkrad "auf eigene Faust" mit Sattelseife gereinigt (Ergebnis: Bilder 1 bis 3). Dann erfolgt eine zweistufige Reinigung mit Produkten des Aufbereitungssets, erst Reinigung, dann Entfettung. Anschließend werden rauhe Stellen mit einem feinen Schleifschwamm (Körnung 800 bis 1000) geschliffen (Ergebnis: Bilder 4 und 5). Dann wird in mehreren Gängen Farbe aufgetragen und mit dem Föhn zwischengetrocknet (Ergebnis: Bilder 6 bis 8). Nach einem Tag durchtrocknen kommt noch ein Schutz gegen Abfärben und Abreiben drauf - fertig (Endergebnis: Bilder 9 bis 11).

Fazit: Das Ergebnis kann sich sehen lassen. Natürlich ist es nicht so gut wie ein neu bezogenes Lenkrad, aber es kostet ja auch nur ein Zehntel. Ich glaube, das Ergebnis wäre noch etwas besser geworden, wenn ich die Farbe mindestens zwei oder drei Tage hätte trocknen lassen, beim Auftrag der letzten Schicht wurde das Tuch noch leicht schwarz. Was sich jetzt noch zeigen wird, ist wie gut das Ganze hält und wie lange es hübsch aussieht. Um das herauszufinden, muss ich das Lenkrad aber erstmal verbauen. Ich berichte dann!
