Well water for my fish?
I'm moving temporarily for 6 months in a few days, i'm taking my favorite fish (1 goldfish and a my dojo loaches) with me because i don't trust people at home to continue doing weekly water changes on my 75 gallon.
What do i use for water changes if the well water isn’t okay? Is there anything i might need to extra test for in the well water that i don’t know of? My problem is i can’t test the water until i get there (i have liquid tests) and i need a backup plan in case it’s not okay. I’ve seen people use bottled spring water? If so what brand? I know the sunlight on plastic bottles can make the water toxic from the plastic. God forbid i drive my fish 14 hours away and when i arrive the water is toxic for them.
I have a plan ready for setting up:
Large bin for the first 2-3 days to get them acclimated to the new water, set up their new tank while they’re acclimating and then transfer them to their main tank.
I’m bringing an extra 10 gallons of my own water for acclimating them.
I know i have to aerate the well water for 24 hours before putting it in my tank.
If this might be too stressful for my fish or for me lol please let me know and i’ll see what i can do. Last time i left them in another’s care i had to spend a whole month cleaning and stuff bc people like to overfeed other peoples fish for some reason and i would hate to come home to them all gone
Why do people think betta sororities are ethical?
EDIT: IM TALKING ABOUT BETTA SPLENDENS. There is absolutely no reason to ever have your own betta sorority other than your own selfishness.
The betta fish we buy in stores are literally bred to be fighting bettas. “Spreading the aggression” what so everyone’s consistently stressed about each other at all times? how do you own fish and not care about their wellbeing? there is nothing good ever that can come from a betta sorority. it’s like purposely pre-proning your fish to long-term stress and health issues.
i thought everyone agreed universally that bettas are singular fish, rarely even community tank fish. 🤷♀️
betta tank upgrade tips
My friends mom had her betta in that container for like 4 months. she has a habit of buying pets and keeping them in small enclosures. it makes me sad to see, so i just went out today and bought plants and used extra sand and decor and stuff i keep that ive never used and set this thing up in like 2 hours because she had this starter tank kit in storage and she was able to retrieve it. what should i add? (the sponge filter is already cycled from a different tank, there is a heater just no need for it now bc it’s hot out)
i know a tall tank isn’t ideal for a betta in the long run but it’s what she had and the best i can do for a fish that’s not mine. any suggestions? any floor plants i should add? (i have root tabs,) i wont be able to continuously tend to this tank as it isnt mine. i gave her a rundown of continuous care for him.
Dojo loach with finrot help!
My boyfriend put some fish with finrot into my tank while i didn’t know and i came back to find this finrot petco goldfish monstrosity in my tank so i returned the sick fish and been eyeing my other fish and 2 other goldfish started showing symptoms so i separated the 2 and they are both being treated with salt and showing major improvements.
it’s been about a month since those fish have been removed and 2 weeks since i separated the ones that caught finrot.
the thing is i don’t know how to treat finrot in dojo loaches. i know they’re scaleless fish so i can’t use salt. i love this little guy so much! edit: 2 of my dojos have finrot, should i treat them together? i have kanaplex will that work? how do you treat finrot in dojo loaches?
i have a 10 gallon hospital tank with 2 seeded sponge filters running that will be ready for them in 3 days (when the salt is fully diluted from my goldfish’s hospital tank) i have indian almond leaves as well! i currently have the 2 dojos in a separate 40 gallon tank until i can treat them (the 40 gallon tank is not mine so i can’t use it for treatment)
“MOM FEED ME”
this is a hospital tank not his tank lol
Help aquascaping my 75 gallon
currently own this tank with 3 goldfish and i forgot the name of my little guys at the top😭 but ive just removed the bottom and am adding black aquarium sand tonight. im buying the white floss stuff to put in the back of my filter to rid of excess sand. (i didnt know gravel was bad for goldfish omg??)
i know goldfish are assholes and uproot the fuck out of plants so i’m planning on buying plants that don’t need to go in substrate and attaching them to my rocks. also planning on removing the house so they have more space. and removing the fake plants. i’ve never used live plants before, what would you suggest for beginners?
I also have flourish excel i bought a while ago idk if i should use that. i also have root tabs but i dont need those unless im planning on planting in substrate correct? I really want to have a more natural tank for my guys!! i haven’t seen many people with planted goldfish tanks. how do you guys do it?
(also i have a cat so i can’t have out of water plants bc i know most of those are toxic)
NOT MY FISH how do i help this guy?
My boyfriend’s mom has a betta this tiny ass tank. he had that dent in his spine before she got him. idk why she thinks it’s fine i feel like he looks very ragged. i switched her food to fluval bug bites so he’s got at least a digestible diet now. obviously i need to buy him a bigger tank for him (10 gallons) which im planning on doing as soon as i have the time. first of all i honestly can’t tell if his fins are cut or he has finrot or what? also how should i go about setting up the new tank once i get it? i know all the basics about decor, i mean plant wise and substrate etc. also does he look sick?? i can tell he looks depressed. i just cant tell if he has obvious finrot or if he’s just got those kinda fins? they look short as hell. but his fin on the bottom should not at all point forward i think thats weird. what are your thoughts? i need to save this poor guy. i have kanaplex and aquarium salt and such if you think he’s sick and needs to be medicated! i just am completely unsure.
EDIT: I OWN FISH. I HAVE A 100 GALLON FISH TANK WITH 3 GOLDFISH. i don’t need basics i just need to know if i need to treat him immidiately and what plants you use for your bettas.
(i own goldfish not bettas so idk much abt them)
i thought he was dead😭
DO NOT COME FOR THE TANK THIS IS NOT MY TANK. THIS IS MY S/O’s MOMS. I PUT THEM IN HERE TEMPORARILY WHILE THERE WAS A HEAT WAVE BC MY ROOM TEMP WAS LIKE 83* THE WATER. they live in a 100 gallon with plants! (2 dojo loaches) they’re little assholes i swear i have a heart attack that they’re dead every few days
Transporting goldfish in car 1000 miles, need advice
I could really use some advice from people who have experience transporting goldfish long distances.
I have a small oranda mutt (not a baby, just a small guy) that's about 2.5 inches long. He's lived in a 100-gallon tank his entire life with 2 other goldfish. The guy has the immune system and stomach of a fucking elephant. Right now he's in a hospital tank being treated for fin rot. Before anyone starts the blame game, the disease wasn't caused by my tank. My s/o randomly added new fish with the disease without telling me. Those fish have been since returned. Thankfully, he's been doing amazing in his hospital tank.
This is my first time using a hospital tank and I am very surprised by how comfortable he seems. He’s a very social little guy. I also have crippling anxiety about his health, so I'm constantly checking his water parameters and spending time with him. He's definitely my favorite little guy.
The issue is, in about a month, I'm moving 16–18 hours away by car. The move is only temporary, i’ll only be there for about five months.
Even if he's fully healed by then, I've been considering bringing just him with me instead of leaving him in the 100-gallon. Part of it is because he's my favorite, but it's also because while I'm gone I won't be the one maintaining the main tank. I'll have to trust other people to do the water changes and test the water the way I normally would, so i’m worried and assuming I’m gonna come home to sick fish. At the same time, I feel guilty because he's lived with his two tankmates his whole life. I know goldfish aren't "schooling" fish in the strict sense, but they are social and like friends! I don't know if separating him for five months would be stressful or unfair to him. or selfish of me?
My genuine worry is the trip itself. I don't want him to die during the drive. I’d actually do 62 backflips and discover another disease.
My current plan was:
Transport him in a 5-gallon bucket with fresh conditioned water,
use a battery-powered air pump (rated for up to 30 gallons),
dose Seachem Prime or condition the water then use ammo-lock for ammonia (which do you think is better?? i know ammo-lock doesn’t bind nitrate)
Bring my cycled media with me: a cycled 10-gallon sponge filter, a cycled 20-gallon sponge filter, and my cycled Top Fin filter (I replaced the carbon cartridge with biofoam).
Once I arrive, I'd buy a new tank there rather than transporting one and get everything running immediately.
One more problem: the place I'll be staying has well water. I've never kept fish on well water before, so I have no idea what the hardness, pH, or anything else will be like after conditioning. if you’re familiar with that kinda stuff any and all advice is appreciated! So I'm kinda in a pickle.
Would bringing him be an unnecessarily risky and selfish decision just because I want him with me? Or is transporting one healthy goldfish for a long drive actually reasonable? Has anyone here done a move this long with a goldfish? What would you do if this were your fish? Should i not even try? I’m definetely more concerned about his safety than having a fish friend with me while I’m lonely
Fin rot? Help please!
I have a 75 gallon aquarium that’s been running for about 1.5-2 years with 3 goldfish. The tank has always been stable, I do routine water changes, liquid test my water, and my levels have always been good.
While I was away, my boyfriend got 3 more goldfish from Petco without telling me. When I got home I realized they all had what looked like fin rot (black on the tips of their fins and holes in spots in their fins) so I removed them from the tank immediately. I'm not good with fish diseases at all. I've had 2 fish in the past come with health issues and I tried everything I could but still couldn't save them, and I'm honestly still devastated about it. I really don't want to mess this up again.
After removing the new fish I did water changes on my main tank and liquid tested everything. As far as I can tell, all my parameters are normal. The problem is every source I read says something completely different about how fin rot spreads, so I don't even know what to believe. (side note: if you know how/if i should clean/disinfect my 75 gallon without hurting my fish let me know)
I've been watching my original fish really closely and my favorite oranda developed what I think is early fin rot. I saw a red spot on his tail and there are long V-shaped tears. I've seen fin rot before on other fish and thought it was getting better, but after comparing pictures later I realized it had actually just evened out and gotten worse, so i have no clue what goes into this.
I moved him into a 10 gallon hospital tank about 4 days ago. He has 2 sponge filters in there (1 seeded, 1 not), and I've been checking the water every day with a liquid test kit. Since he's an oranda in a 10 gallon, I'm expecting some ammonia because of how much waste he produces, so I've been doing 30-50% water changes every day and using Seachem Prime.
The issue is I haven't actually treated him with anything yet. I have 2 full vials of Kanaplex just in case, and I also have aquarium salt, but I'm honestly scared to use anything unless I know I need it.
I also can't tell if he's already starting to heal or if it's getting worse. (there were some cloudy spots at the end of his tail you can see in the first photo i assume were hurt and now healing, it’s turned into a white line and clearer) He's completely white, which makes it so hard to tell. The little red spot he had on his fin (which is what made me notice and take him out in the first place) is completely gone now and looks like it's been replaced with new fin tissue. The Petco fish had black fin edges and holes in their fins. My guy doesn't have black edges at all, his fins just look a little torn in some spots. Before this his fins had always been absolutely pristine.
He's acting completely normal, eating, swimming, begging for food, everything seems fine. I haven’t fed him in 3 days and he ate the algea off the cycled sponge filter lol. The only thing I can tell is he definitely misses his friends, and I spend time with him every day because I feel bad.
What should I do, or what would you do? Would you just keep doing daily water changes and watch him, start Kanaplex anyway, use aquarium salt, or something else? I can post my exact hospital tank parameters if that would help. I just don't want to hurt my baby by making the wrong decision!
Also let me know if i need to remove any decor from my hospital tank this is basically my first time and i just don’t want him to be depressed! And i haven’t fed him much (3 sinking pellets yesterday after not feeding for 3 days bc of ammonia and ik he needs protein, if i need to feed him more and do more water changes too lmk!)
Oranda or Fantail?
Got this guy about 6 months ago sold to me as a fantail (he’s in a hospital tank in these photos) he hasn’t grown much only gotten a bit rounder, he’s been in a 75 gallon his since i got him with 2 other goldfish, i was sure he was an oranda but his stunted growth makes me think otherwise?
