Just wondering.

In the episode "men against fire", soldiers are made to see people with a lower iq, diseases or criminal offenses as roaches. As I'm rewatching, I'm thinking. The whole point is for them to not reproduce so the next generation doesn't have what they have. So, with the technology they have, why couldn't they just.. castrate them? Instead of killing them, why couldn't they have made it so it was impossible for them to reproduce? They'd just let them die of old age or of natural causes instead of murdering millions of people, no?
