Don’t sleep on Duskfade

Don’t sleep on Duskfade

I’m a little behind on content so I have no idea if any of the crew have talked about this one, but regardless, please don’t sleep on it! It’s one of the most enjoyable gaming experiences I’ve had all year and I’m only about halfway through it. It’s one of those rare games that’s a love letter to a largely bygone genre but it actually nails it and doesn’t feel like a cheap imitation. It’s hitting on every level for me.

If you’re unfamiliar, it’s an action platformer inspired by 2000’s games like Ratchet & Clank, Kingdom Hearts, and Banjo Kazooie. There’s even a little Zelda and Metroidvania DNA in there too.

I know the year is packed but I highly recommend it!

Has this reporting from Jason been discussed?

Haven’t seen this anywhere yet and wasn’t sure if it’s been posted or talked about anywhere or on content.

If this is all true, this is kind of devastating to me. I mean the original announcement was already super depressing. This reeks of greed and clearly Sony wants to control the market to make themselves richer (as if they’re not already the second most popular platform and still making billions of dollars). And none of this will trickle down to devs or people who’ve actually earned it.

I’m also a die hard physical collector (unless digital is the only option). Hell, I’ll even buy a lot of games twice if I like it enough; once digitally and once physically. But Sony’s first party games are my exact favorite types of games. Third-person, story heavy, action-adventure games. Both Last of Us games and the new GoW games are some of my favorite games of all time. Uncharted, the Ghosts, Horizon, Spider-Man, Saros, there really hasn’t been a big Sony first-party project I haven’t loved since the early PS4 days.

This news sucks and it seriously makes me reconsider supporting PlayStation when the PS6 comes around. But missing out on first party content? That’s also gonna be a tough pill to swallow. Sony’s pretty much right: we’re gonna suck it up if we wanna play their games.

I want physical games, but more importantly, I want everyone to have a choice in how they own their media. I can’t see sending a message any other way than voting with my wallet. Gaming is my only hobby and it’s becoming increasingly exhausting when I have to continue to make (what I consider to be) many heavy moral choices. You may not agree with that aspect, and that’s fine, but I was just wondering what everyone’s thoughts on this were.

EDIT: This is not actually reporting based on leaked info, but rather a summation of Jason’s opinions based on what he’s heard. Just wanted to provide clarification.

Replaced 12v and still have multiple systems failing

Got a used 2018 Touring in March, clean bill of health except for the battery, which I replaced late March. Also took it to the dealer around the same time for a full inspection, and they found a couple of things they recommended to replace, but nothing electrical.

About 2 weeks ago, I started getting multiple systems failing when I started my car. I did the 12v reset, and it’s still doing it intermittently, albeit more often than not. I’m not sure what else could be wrong with it. Any ideas?

These are the warnings I get:

-Road Departure Mitigation Problem

-Lane Keeping Assist Problem

-Adaptive Cruise Control Problem

-Collision Mitigation System Problem

TIA

How do we continue to support these companies?

Been thinking about this a lot after all of the news hitting the past few days. Between corporate greed, massive layoffs, studio closures, and a push for Gen AI, it’s getting harder and harder for me to reconcile my support for some of these big companies.

I was really looking forward to the new direction Xbox is taking and the big releases they have lined up, but I also don’t want to support a company that’s willing to drop 3+ studios like they’re nothing just to keep the C-suites rich (and we gotta call it like that cause that’s what it is).

I know the flip side is that these devs just wanna make cool games and by not supporting them, they’ll ironically also end up on the chopping block. But how do we send a message if not with our wallets?

I love video games and I want to play as many of them as possible, but I also want the people who make them to be paid well, be taken care of, and not have the guillotine hovering over their heads at all times.

Mina the Hollower and difficulty

Before I say anything, yes I realize Mina has a plethora of assists and accessibility options to make the experience more enjoyable. I’m talking about the default game and what I’m assuming was the intended experience the devs crafted (this goes for any difficult games too, not just Mina).

Started Mina and am about 3-4 hours in at the first dungeon. I’ve been excited about the game since it was announced, and I played the demo and found it appropriately challenging. That’s, unfortunately, not been my experience with the full game. It’s difficult as fuck and I’m honestly not sure what kind of masochist would put up with this kind of punishment willingly. Early game enemies eviscerate you in 3-4 hits, attacks are nearly impossible to dodge, the burrow mechanic is really difficult to time properly, the healing system is really nerfed at the start, and even the “fast travel” system punishes you instead of just allowing you to quickly warp between points.

My question is this: Why, in the past 5 or so years, are devs so locked into the idea that hard game = good game? Why does every action game need to be punishingly difficult? I find myself really yearning for traditional Zelda-like action adventure experiences, but am almost constantly presented with Soulsbornes and roguelikes. It’s exhausting and frankly boring to have every game ape Dark Souls or Dead Cells.

The concept “git gud” is trite and reductive. I’m 36 and have played video games my entire life. I’m not a bad gamer, but there are some games I’m just not good at no matter how hard I try. For the most part, I find the strategy of “dodge until there’s a slim window for an attack, rinse & repeat” incredibly dull and frustrating. Couple that with runbacks and losing all of your experience/currency upon death, and it turns me off of so many games. Yes, you could say that Soulsbornes aren’t my type of game, but like I said, I’m just tired of what feels like every. single. game. prioritizing difficulty over interesting and unique strategy and mechanics.

Mina could’ve been an incredible Zelda-like action adventure for me. I’ve cranked up the modifiers and I am enjoying my time with it and plan to finish it. But with so many outlets giving it 10s, I guess expected something different. Something more inventive than “2D Bloodborne”.

Thoughts?
