Opened Scotiabank Preferred Account online as a newcomer (Work Permit), but promo code is missing?

Hi everyone,

I’m a newcomer to Canada on a Work Permit and recently opened a Scotiabank Preferred Package account online to take advantage of the StartRight newcomer offer (12-month fee waiver + cash bonuses).

Today, I went into my local branch to do the mandatory identity verification using my Work Permit and Passport. The advisor updated my profile data (Date of Arrival and Work Permit status) and told me everything was good to go. However, when I asked about the newcomer benefits, she told me that because the account was opened online, she "could not change anything" on her end to explicitly apply the offer or was unaware of the newcomer status.

To double-check, I contacted Scotiabank’s online chat support.

  • Chat support told me that my arrival date is there, but the actual StartRight Promotional/Campaign Code is completely missing from my profile. They explicitly told me the branch needs to manually add it.
  • The branch manager/advisor insists that because my profile fields are updated, there is no button for them to manually add a code to an online-opened account.

Has any other newcomer opened a Scotia account online and run into this? Does the system actually auto-trigger the StartRight benefits just based on the profile data fields (Arrival Date/WP status), or did my branch advisor miss a manual campaign enrollment step?

Need Help: HDFC Account Frozen – Can’t Change Bank Account for ICICI Nasdaq SIP

Hi everyone,
I need some advice regarding an SIP issue.

My HDFC savings account has been temporarily frozen due to a bank compliance review. The bank has informed me that the issue is under process, and I’m expecting the account to be operational by the end of next week.

The problem is that I have a few SIP auto-debits scheduled before then.

For most of my mutual funds, I’m able to skip the upcoming SIP installment or change the payment instructions. However, for my **ICICI Prudential NASDAQ Index Fund SIP**, I don’t see any option to skip the installment or change the registered bank account. The only option available is to cancel the SIP, which I would prefer to avoid.

Has anyone faced a similar situation?
Is it possible to change the primary/default bank account for an existing ICICI Prudential SIP without cancelling it?
If yes, how can I do it?
If the auto-debit fails because my bank account is frozen, will the SIP continue normally next month, or will it be cancelled automatically?

Any guidance or personal experience would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

HDFC Bank froze my savings account due to "unusual transactions" – has anyone successfully got it unfrozen?

Hi everyone,

I'm looking for some advice from anyone who has gone through a similar situation with HDFC Bank.

A few days ago, I received an email from HDFC stating that my savings account has been temporarily restricted due to "recent activity that doesn't match my usual transaction pattern." They have disabled my debit card, NetBanking, ATM access, and phone banking.

They've asked me to visit my home branch and provide:

  • Latest ITR
  • Source of funds
  • Nature of transactions
  • Details of other bank accounts

For context, I'm currently working in Canada and this is my personal savings account in India.

Over the last 3–6 months, the account had the following genuine transactions:

  • Salary savings remitted from Canada to India
  • Mutual fund redemptions
  • Transfer of funds to purchase land
  • Regular UPI transactions

The total movement through the account was around ₹20–25 lakhs. There were no cash deposits or business transactions—everything is through banking channels and can be supported with documents.

Since I'm currently outside India, visiting my home branch isn't easy.

I have a few questions:

  1. Has anyone experienced a similar freeze/restriction by HDFC?
  2. How long did it take to get the account reactivated?
  3. Were scanned documents accepted, or did someone have to visit the branch in person?
  4. Is there anything specific I should provide besides the ITR and source-of-funds documents to speed up the process?
  5. Did HDFC explain what exactly triggered the review?

Any experiences or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!
