Old School Gamer Needs Help
I’m in my early 50s. I recently got the urge to play some good video games but I can’t find the right fit for me.
I went retro with a ModRetro Chromatic and a MiSTer but after the initial nostalgia flush, I found most of my good old time games either boring or way too basic in terms of graphics.
I got a PS5 and played a little bit of Forza Horizon 5 and Spider-Man but, man, these modern games are freaking boring. It’s like watching a movie and playing a little bit once in a while (and on easy stuff, I must say - I crashed that car in Forza Horizon thousands of times and it still runs). I also have an old Nintendo Switch and played Mario Odissey but I hate those super open worlds where you just spent time walking around.
Before I declare this a failed experiment, do you have any suggestions for me? Specific games on PS5 or Switch or systems (for example Evercade or Analogue devices)?
EDIT: adding some of the games I used to love, so you may have an idea of my taste
Commodore 64: Zak McKraken, Bubble Bobble, Giana Sisters, the Winter/Summer Games line
Commodore Amiga: it came from the desert, turricane, kick off 2, simcity, lemmings
Sega Master System: Teddy Boy, phantasy Star, Alex Kidd, my hero, transbot
Sega Genesis: Sonic, Aladdin
Super Nintendo: Mario all stars, donkey Kong country, super Mario kart
PlayStation: Micro machines, gran turismo, Colin McRae rally
This is a super basic list. I played tons of stuff.
