What game can you not put down?

What is one game that you just can’t seem to put down? Could be older could be newer, could be from your childhood or it could be from this year, but you just can’t seem to stop wanting to play it. What game is it?

For me Mario 64 is the goat. But more today’s era, Subnautica has been the one. There’s a few like GTA or Cyberpunk but the first two I listed are games I will NEVER get bored of and could play till I die.

So what are yours? 🤔

Old School Gamer Needs Help

I’m in my early 50s. I recently got the urge to play some good video games but I can’t find the right fit for me.

I went retro with a ModRetro Chromatic and a MiSTer but after the initial nostalgia flush, I found most of my good old time games either boring or way too basic in terms of graphics.

I got a PS5 and played a little bit of Forza Horizon 5 and Spider-Man but, man, these modern games are freaking boring. It’s like watching a movie and playing a little bit once in a while (and on easy stuff, I must say - I crashed that car in Forza Horizon thousands of times and it still runs). I also have an old Nintendo Switch and played Mario Odissey but I hate those super open worlds where you just spent time walking around.

Before I declare this a failed experiment, do you have any suggestions for me? Specific games on PS5 or Switch or systems (for example Evercade or Analogue devices)?

EDIT: adding some of the games I used to love, so you may have an idea of my taste

Commodore 64: Zak McKraken, Bubble Bobble, Giana Sisters, the Winter/Summer Games line

Commodore Amiga: it came from the desert, turricane, kick off 2, simcity, lemmings

Sega Master System: Teddy Boy, phantasy Star, Alex Kidd, my hero, transbot

Sega Genesis: Sonic, Aladdin

Super Nintendo: Mario all stars, donkey Kong country, super Mario kart

PlayStation: Micro machines, gran turismo, Colin McRae rally

This is a super basic list. I played tons of stuff.

Just tried Pragmata… honestly impressed so far

So I picked up Pragmata and have about an hour in it so far. I went in with pretty low expectations since I hadn’t seen a ton of hype or detailed impressions, but honestly, I’m pleasantly surprised.

Right from the start, the game feels polished. The gameplay is actually fun and engaging, and it doesn’t feel clunky or unfinished like some recent releases. Movement and mechanics feel smooth, and so far it’s been easy to get into without feeling overwhelming.

Visually, the game looks really good. The graphics are sharp, environments are detailed, and there’s a nice overall atmosphere. It definitely feels like a proper current-gen title rather than something rushed out.

What impressed me the most, though, is the performance. I’m running it at max settings, native 1440p on my RX 9070 XT, and it’s been super stable. No stutters, no weird drops—just smooth gameplay. Considering how poorly optimized a lot of new games are these days, this was honestly a big surprise and a huge plus.

I know I’m still very early into the game, so things could change later on, but as a first impression, it’s been really solid. Definitely more enjoyable than I expected going in. If the rest of the game holds up like this, I think it could end up being pretty underrated.

What is that ONE game from a franchise that you just never beat?

Is there that one game that has completely different gameplay? Or has a story that you just can't get into? You've beaten every other game in that franchise but just can't finish this one?

For me, it's Full Frontal Assault from the Ratchet and Clank Series. I just hate the gameplay. I've never been big on tower-defense type games and this one tries to combine it with a sort-of sandbox arena where you have to gather materials and weapons to add to your base defenses. What's worst for me, is that the game gives you no real reason as to why losing your base would actually matter, lol. The one thing I haven't tried is to play in co-op mode, mostly because no-one I know cares to play or consistently has the time to.

What in Your Opinion Is the Craziest Upgrade in Graphics for a Video Game Remake?

I don't even remember what I was originally looking for, but eventually stumbled onto Resident Evil 2 from 1998 being remade in 2019. Looking at the original and the new back-to-back is pretty wild when it comes to the updated graphics.

This got me thinking, what do you think was the most wild upgrade in graphics for a video game remake? It must be a direct remake that either follows the original story faithfully or has very little changed other than maybe the controls because it's on a new and different system. I'm sure there's some pretty crazy ones that may have been direct upgrades from the arcade days.

First 3 games I should buy on Switch?

Finally decided to buy a Switch. I have a 10, 9, and 6 year old. Decided on switch bc I want them all to be able to play at the same time and maybe when they have a couple friends over.

What are the first 3 games I should buy? Advantage goes to 4-player games.

My thought is:

  1. Mario Kart
  2. Smash Bros
  3. Mario Odyssey

I was split be Mario and a Zelda game but figure Mario may be more interesting for the kids. I’d also like to play sometimes alone when kids are in bed. Personally, I like mature shooters but figure I’d focus on the kids initially.

What do you think my first 3 games should be?
