Will soccer's popularity in the U.S. decline as children of immigrants assimilate?
In the past few decades, America has received tens of millions of immigrants from soccer-loving countries, especially Mexico, in addition to Central and South America, Europe, Africa, and east Asia. This has marginally increased soccer's popularity in the U.S., particularly of the Mexican national team and clubs. Nevertheless, professional soccer remains a niche sport in the U.S., and its fanbase and viewership is a drop in the ocean compared to the big 4 sports of American football, basketball, baseball and ice hockey.
There is the classic 3-generation assimilation pattern where among descendants of immigrants, many cultural traits of the old country fade away within 3 generations. For example, most 3rd-generation Mexican-Americans speak little to no Spanish. The northeast has a large Italian-American community, but most of their ancestors immigrated over a century ago and few of them speak Italian today.
Do you see soccer's popularity in the U.S. increasing or decreasing in the coming decades as the descendants of immigrants assimilate to American culture and our 4 major sports?
