Bonnie and Clyde robbed

My now deceased babies Bonnie and Clyde — you’d think they’d be the ones doing the robbing.

TL; DR: Crisp Rat is such a mediocre actor he genuinely ruins my day. You need someone with crazy range to be able to play Mario and he just could not to that, he was the wrong person for the task, that’s what made me bump the film down from 4 stars to 3.4. Charlie Day was an odd choice for Luigi but he is a good voice actor, Pratt is just not. I will say, he was far better in the second one. The animation is both was incredible. My one criticism of the first one is it feels less like they were travelling and more like they were just hopping from location, but that is what video games are like, so I can’t be mad about it.

Super Mario Bros Movie: 3.5 stars.

My biggest issue is Crisp Rat. Pratt is the most mediocre actor of all time, you can’t have him star as an animated character, he doesn’t have the range or enthusiasm for it, and he has so many lines — so, so many lines. Mario is animated (hehe) and he’s just flat. Charlie Day was an odd choice for Luigi — he’s a solid voice actor, it’s just his voice itself that doesn’t work well, that strained sound that makes it sound like he’s on a verge of screaming, I adore it, but it just didn’t feel right. Every other choice for voices was really good — Jack Black I was skeptical of but he really, really delivered as Bowser, that was a nice surprised. Anya Taylor-Joy was absolutely perfect for Princess Peach.

The animation was incredible — the lighting and the faithfulness to the video game adaptation was wonderful to see, my one critique is the adventure feeling like hopping from place to place rather than travelling through, along a journey, and to be fair, that’s what video games are like, so I don’t think they could have done it any other way, but it felt sort of jerky and forced.

Super Mario Galaxy Movie: 3 stars.

Pratt was better this time around — not good, but better. As with the first, the animation and choreography really carry. This one was less video game-y, so I missed that charm from the first movie. Character motives also weren’t always clear or linear, which doesn’t really work for a kids’ movie. Brie Larson was a good choice for Rosalina.
