feathers in northern california

found these feathers on some families property in northern california. i believe they’re from a california scrub jay, acorn woodpecker, northern flicker, and red shouldered hawk. but im not certain and i would love to know! i would also like to know is it bad to collect feathers? i’ve never collected them from protected areas like parks or forest service land but i’m not sure what the protocol on that is.

aramark hiring process 🫪🫩

i’ve applied to 4 or 5 different positions with aramark in yosemite for the winter season. today was my forth time having nobody call for my scheduled interview time. they have a useless AI bot schedule your interviews and without fail every time nobody calls for the time i book for. every time i have to call HR, have them leave my information with a hiring manager, and wait for a real life person hiring manager to reach out to me. i’m applying for food service positions with great food service experience. i finally made it through to an interview for one of the positions after emailing the hiring manager back and forth for 2 weeks and having 3 different interview times fail (nobody called me). the interviewer told me that my resume was fantastic and that i was very qualified and spent the entire interview going over housing, the move in process, and how i would receive my uniform just to find out a week after that i was not chosen for the position.

does anyone have a secret to getting a job with aramark?? is it just torture the entire time and one day they’ll say yes? i’m exhausted. i’ve applied for a position with NPS as well but im not feeling very confident about it so im trying to have a back up plan. any tips on other employment leads in yosemite for winter?

edit to add: am i too early? the information i saw was that hiring for winter seasons (oct-apr) happens throughout july and august. i would love to not have to work for aramark if anyone has other leads but it seems to me that to be in the valley you have to be with aramark or NPS.

backpacking with a dog in northern sierras OR central coast?

hi all! i’m lucky enough to be roadtripping with my dog and my boyfriend for the next two weeks or so. we are planning on spending about half the trip on either the central coast, or the mendocino coast, and the other half of the trip in the northern sierras/foothills (so tahoe area thru lassen area). we’ve gone camping with our dog a ton but we’re looking to take him on his first backpacking trip. i know that any NPS is off limits with the dog, so i’m looking for suggestions in either the coast area or the sierra area to backpack with him. right now all i’ve got is desolation wilderness in tahoe or national forest areas near tahoe (would love a more specific recommendation in this area if you have any!)

my dog is a malinois mix so he’s very active and capable. we’re thinking of a 2-3 night trip. thank you in advance

what is this rattlesnake bird???

i’ve been roadtripping through the northern rockies, and throughout the yellowstone area and up through western and northwestern montana i’ve been hearing this bird im just calling the rattlesnake bird.

i hear it primarily in mixed forests with pines and cottonwoods/aspens. i’ve heard it mostly midday, and the call consists of usually one long trill that sounds like a rattlesnake. it’s pretty loud and definitely attention grabbing- but it normally only does this call once. occasionally twice. it’s clear, loud, and rattlesnake-y! it’s been driving me nuts. i can’t catch it on merlin since it only calls once usually, and i haven’t gotten a visual on the bird.

at first i thought maybe it was a crazy drumming sound from a woodpecker but im not sure. google tells me it’s a flicker but i dont think it is. it doesn’t sound like it in any of the audio clips ive heard.

help!
