Currency cards are beautiful, and they're delicate. They scratch, chip, and bend more easily than most trading cards. How you pack a card says a lot about you as a trader, and sub members remember. Here's how we do it.

Step 0: protect it the day you pull it

• Penny sleeves (soft 3x4" sleeves) fit every Currency card. Sleeve anything better than base right away. Sleeving base too can be a good habit—certainly for Short Prints (SPs).
• Toploaders for gems, Meta-Rares, cold foils, and any other inserts. Thickness matters:
  • 35pt (regular) for parallels and cold foils, so they don't slide around.
  • 55pt (thick) for gemstone refractors and Meta-Rares. They're thicker cards, and the extra room keeps pressure off the surface.
  • Double-sided holofoils are thicker still. 55pt works; 58pt or more is comfier.
• Magnetic one-touch cases are great for display. Don't ship in them; they can crack open in transit.

You can find all of this at GameStop, a card shop, or online.

Step 1: pack it like you mean it

Your card is already sleeved and (if it's a hit) toploaded. Now:

1. Team bag. A small resealable bag. Holds around 10 sleeved parallels or a couple of toploaders. If a card slips out of the sleeve in transit, it stops at the edge of the bag instead of getting a corner crushed.
2. Ding defenders. Sandwich the team bag between two stiff cardboard or plastic protectors.
3. Painter's tape. Close the sandwich with four short pieces, one per side. Fold the end of each piece over on itself to make a little tab ("courtesy tab") so the other person can peel it off in a second. Painter's tape comes off clean; duct tape, Scotch tape, and masking tape don't.
4. Inner layer. Slide the sandwich into a small bubble mailer or a zip bag so it can't rattle around.
5. Outer bubble mailer. Seal it up.

Please don't ship a bare toploader in a plain envelope, even if it's team-bagged. Other card hobbies do it. Here, even if it arrives fine, the person on the other end probably won't trade with you again.

Cheap cards are still cards

For a low-value single (under $20) that you're sending out, you can use an Ebay Standard Envelope and ship at the ~$1 USPS tier, trimming the bubble layers. Still, keep the sleeve, a top-loader, and the team bag. That's the floor.

Step 2: ship it

Most of us use USPS Ground Advantage. It comes with tracking and $100 of insurance built in. Buy the label online (USPS Click-N-Ship, Pirate Ship, Shippo, and similar) and it's around $6; the same label at the post office counter can be closer to $10. Print it at home or show the QR code at the counter. If you trade a lot, a cheap thermal label printer pays for itself.

For anything worth more than $100, add insurance. It's cheap next to losing something irreplaceable. And always share the tracking number with your trading partner. (And don't forget to confirm the trade for trade flair!)

Before you drop it in the box

• Tabs on the tape?
• Right address? Read it back to your partner.
• Tracking shared?
• Photo of the packed card, just in case?

That's it. Pack it like you'd want to receive it, and you'll do great here.

Trading is the heart of this sub. It's also where a new collector can get hurt. Here's how we keep it safe, and what we ask of you.

Trade flair: your track record

Next to every member's name is a trade flair showing how many confirmed trades they've done here. People also call it "trade cred." It's a simple trust score. A higher number means a longer track record.

You earn it through the Trade Confirmation Thread (pinned on the main page): Trade Confirmation Thread

How it works:

1. After a trade or sale is done, one side comments in the thread saying what was traded and with whom.
2. The other side replies to confirm.
3. A mod reviews it and bumps both of your flairs by one.

Mods only confirm trades that happened on this sub, not on eBay, Whatnot, or elsewhere. If you've built trust on another subreddit and think it should carry over, message the mods. The mod team decides case by case.

Starting from zero

Everyone starts at zero. The way up is a few small, low-stakes trades with established members. Expect that someone with high flair may ask you to ship first until you've built some of your own. That's not an insult—it's how they got there too.

Paying for things

If money's changing hands, most members use PayPal Friends & Family or personal Venmo because there are no fees. But there's also no buyer protection. If you'd feel safer with PayPal Goods & Services (a small fee, with protection), just say so. Some sellers will ask you to cover the fee. Some members also trade in crypto. There's no purchase protection there at all.

Still nervous? Use the tools

• Search the thread. Look up your trading partner's name in the Trade Confirmation Thread and see who they've dealt with. Past partners are usually happy to share their experience.
• Ask a mod to proxy. For a high-value trade, or when both of you are new, the mod team can act as a go-between: both sides ship to a mod, the mod checks and forwards. Message any of us for details.

How to spot a scam

• Pressure. "Pay now or I sell it to the next guy." Walk away.
• Won't use the sub. Wants to move to DMs, Telegram, or another platform right away.
• Brand-new account, big offering. Especially if they message you first.
• Won't ship first with zero flair, but expects you to pay.
• "Unscratched" redemption cards from a stranger. The sticker can be faked (Guide 1).
• Too good. A /10 gem at a /149 price isn't a bargain, it's bait.

If something feels off, ask in the sub or message the mods before you send anything. Nobody here will think less of you for checking.

If a trade goes wrong

Message the mod team first. Modmail reaches all of us at once, which is better than picking one mod's name off the mod list and hoping they're online. Don't post about it. Rule 11 says any name-and-shame post has to be cleared with the mods before it goes up. That's not us protecting scammers, it is us making sure the facts are straight before someone's name is out there, so that when we do act, it sticks. Concerns raised in good faith are always taken seriously, and we do ban people.

Two more that trip up new members:

• Rule 9: don't post screenshots of DMs or private conversations, yours or anyone else's.
• Rule 1: be respectful. That includes being respectful about other subs and other communities.

Selling and streaming here

Buying, selling, and trading on the sub is our bread and butter. Post away! What stays off the main page is anything that sends people to another platform (Whatnot, eBay, TikTok, YouTube, Instagram), even if there are cards in the post. "Come buy/sell/trade with me over there" belongs in the Currency Daily (pinned). That's Rule 5, and it keeps the front page about the cards.

One exception, new and being tried out for 30 days: live shows. If you've earned trade flair here, been active at least 30 days, and have no Rule 1 strikes, you can post about a live Currency show you're hosting. The rules for that post:

• Cards first. Show what you're ripping, what's on the block, what's in the surprise sets.
• Use the "Live Show" flair.
• One post per show. You can (and should) make follow-up in the comments of your show, after the break, showing the hits.
• No bumping, no reposting, and no promoting shows that aren't yours.

​Currency cards aren't cheap. That's part of why the community is tight. But you don't need a big budget to collect. You need a plan, a checklist, and a little patience.

Pick a lane

The fastest way to burn money is to buy whatever shines. Pick a goal first. Here are some ideas:

• A base set of one series. Cheap, satisfying, and it teaches you the cards.
• One card, every color — a "rainbow" of a single card you love, one gem at a time.
• A theme — every Satoshi, every Doge, every card by one artist.
• Just the ones you like. Also allowed.

Where members buy

• Right here. Trades and sales happen on the sub every day through regular posts.
• The Currency Daily (pinned) is where members post what they're selling and streaming off-platform.
• eBay. Good for singles. Always check sold listings, not just asking prices.
• Live streams (Whatnot and similar). Fun, fast, and easy to overspend on. Set a number before you go in.
• Sealed product if you want the pack-opening experience. Cardsmiths.com sells direct, and GameStop, Best Buy, and Target carry it too. Know the odds before you buy a box (Guide 1).

What a fair price looks like

We can't give financial advice here (Rule 10), and prices move. What we can tell you is how to check:

1. Search eBay sold listings for the exact card, series, and finish. Ignore the asking prices.
2. Look for the same card in recent sub posts. Search the card name plus the series.
3. Ask! A "what's this worth?" post with a clear photo gets honest answers here.

A few things that move price a lot: the series (S5 runs cheaper, see Guide 1), the print run number, whether it's the Alpha or Omega copy, and condition. These cards scratch and ding easily, so a raw card with a chipped corner is worth less than one that's been sleeved since the pack.

A rough ladder, cheapest to priciest, so you know what tier you're looking at:

1. Base cards, the Rainbow Holofoil and Iced Foil parallels
2. Short-print base cards, Matrix Holofoil parallels
3. Crystal Sparkle, the premium parallel
4. Gemstone refractors, roughly by print run (Guide 1)

Two things affect value significantly. Age: older series generally run higher than newer ones, all else equal. Art: within any tier, the card itself matters a lot. A popular piece of art on a common parallel can be worth more than a forgettable one on a rarer finish.

Use the checklists

This is the budget collector's best friend. Every series has an official Cardsmiths checklist, and we've made fillable collector checklists you can save and mark up. Both live in the sidebar under Community Bookmarks → Official Checklists / Collector Checklists.

​Use them to:

• know what's actually in a set before you chase it,
• track what you have and what you need, and
• post a "looking for" list so traders can help you finish.

​Small habits that save money

• Sleeve everything the day you get it. A penny sleeve costs pennies. A scratched gem loses real value.
• Trade up. Extra parallels you don't want are currency (pun intended). Trading is how most people here finish sets.
• Don't chase a single pull. Buying boxes to hit one specific card almost never works out cheaper than buying the card.
• Wait a week. If you still want it, buy it.

You opened a pack, or you're looking at a listing, and the card has a color, a shine, or a number on it you don't understand. This guide covers the basics. It won't make you an expert, but it'll stop you buying blind.

The sets

Cardsmiths Currency has come out in numbered series: Series 1 (2022), Series 2 (2023), Series 3 and Series 4 (2024), and Series 5 (2025). Each series has its own base set (60 cards in S1–S3, 70 in S4, 120 in S5), plus rarer cards mixed into the packs. Series 5 was also printed in a much larger quantity than the earlier series, so S5 cards, especially rare ones, can be much harder to find.

We also welcome Space Galactic Edition (2025) here. It's technically its own "Series 1," but everyone just calls it "Space" or "Currency Space." It has an 80-card base set, the same parallels as Currency, and its own subsets. It doesn't have the gemstone, Meta-Rare, or Cold Foil lineup described below; those are a regular Currency thing.

Along the way there have been smaller Holiday and Summer sets too. They're fun! The checklists for these and all other Currency series are on the sub.

Base cards and parallels

A base card is the plain version. Every card in the set has one.

A parallel is the same card with a different finish. The common ones are Rainbow Holofoil (HF), Iced Foil (IF), Crystal Sparkle (CS), and Matrix Holofoil (MH). Which parallels you get depends on the box: Crystal Sparkle comes from Collector boxes, Matrix comes from Mega boxes. Parallels are common (about one every two or three packs), so they're a great way to start collecting without spending big.

Gemstone refractors — the numbered ones

If your card has a number like 12/49 on it, you've got a gemstone refractor (people just say "gem"). Each gem color has a fixed print run, and the smaller the number, the rarer the card. The main ones, from most to least common:

• Beryl /149 · Emerald /99 · Amethyst /49 · Ruby /25 · Gold /10 · Sapphire /5 · Onyx 1/1 — in every series
• Garnet /75 · Aquamarine /15 — added in Series 2
• Silver /50 · Opal /45 · Jade /45 — added in Series 3 (Opal is Mega-box only, Jade is Collector-box only)
• Citrine /40 — added in Series 4
• Tanzanite /299 · Blue Topaz /199, plus a few unnumbered Topaz colors — added in Series 5

Two words you'll hear: the 1/N copy of a card is called the "Alpha," and the N/N copy (say, 49/49) is the "Omega." Both get extra love from collectors.

What people mean by "hits"

A "hit" is anything better than a base or a regular parallel. The main ones:

• Gemstone refractors — see above.
• Meta-Rares (MR) — a small separate set of cards in each series. (Series 1 meta-rares are different from those of any other series; we will make a post on this and link it to the guide soon.)
• Cold Foils (CF) — Non-refractor inserts, art by Tom Badley with a cold foil finish on both sides.
• Double-Sided Holofoils (DSHF) — Series 3 onward; every bank note designed by Tom Badley shows up as a DSHF. Horizontal bank notes with rainbow foil on both sides; numbered out of 210.
• Set exclusives — for example the Bitcoin "One of One" and "One of Twenty-One" cards in S3 onward. Series 3 additionally has stamped "Day One" numbered out of 21.
• Redemption cards — a scratch-off (S1–S4 and Space) or peel-off (S5) card that you redeem on the Cardsmiths site for crypto; Cardsmiths advertised up to five full 1 BTC wins possible. Heads up: a scratcher's sticker can be faked. Be careful buying "unscratched" redemptions from a stranger. Unpeeled S5 redemptions are safer.

How rare is rare?

Each official checklist prints the pack odds at the bottom. As a rough guide for a Collector box: one rainbow holofoil, one iced foil and one crystal sparkle per collectors box; a gem about every 5 boxes, and a redemption about every 48 boxes. Mega boxes have different odds.

In S1–S4, a Meta-Rare and a Cold Foil each turned up about once per case. In S5, Meta-Rares run about two per case, and Cold Foils, as best we can tell, about one in every five cases. Don't memorize any of this. The checklist has the numbers.

What to do with this

Before you buy, look at three things: which series, which finish, and what number (if any). That's 90% of knowing what you're looking at. If you're still not sure, post a photo to the sub. Someone will tell you, and they'll be nice about it.
