Jon McTavish (Currency Series 1–6)

Jon McTavish (Currency Series 1–6)

Jon McTavish has been in every main Currency series, Series 1 straight through to the Series 6 Preview — 34 cards and counting.

McTavish is a Canadian artist based in Ontario who works across illustration, painting, graphic design and woodcarving, in a colourful surrealist style full of characters, animals and mythological creatures. He also runs a public print shop, so unlike a lot of card artists his portfolio is easy to browse (and buy).

Collector notes...

  • The Chinese-zodiac Meta-Rares are all his, across five series: Ox (S1 MR8), Tiger (S2 MR2), Dragon (S3 MR2), Rabbit (S4 MR2), and now Year of the Snake (S5 MR2) -- one of the most-chased Meta-Rares in the whole line.
  • The MTG crossover gemstone cards are his too, and they're built like nothing else in Currency. Each of the SPs is a nod to a Magic: The Gathering card — a gemstone motif set into the art panel, a panel below that explaining that gem's significance, and a one-off reverse side unique to the franchise (bare background, oversized Currency logo). Blue Diamond (S2), Ruby and Emerald (S4), Sapphire, Opal and Diamond (S5), all of course with their full-art regular variants depicting the gemstone type.
  • He's confirmed returning: his Molly Pitcher (C6P-5) is in the Series 6 Preview.

Sealed master case break this Thursday! 🔥👀

This Thursday for my regular Currency show 5pm Pacific / 8pm Eastern, I'll be breaking a sealed master case of Space Galactic Edition collectors boxes. That's right! 48 shots at an onyx, or a hyper-rare 64 or 75 crystal sparkle 👀

The shop is loaded for prebidding!

Show link: https://www.whatnot.com/live/d7cd0c17-7c0c-44ac-a7e7-c257b9e4d110

All numbered spots are paired—with combinations shuffled from my last break—and all insert spots are exploded. $20 buys you two shots at an onyx, ~$10 a shot at the cold foil, constellations refractor, solar system refractor, or deep space refractors you're looking for!

Followers and buyers giveaways will be announced closer to, but for sure they will include Space and Currency parallels and gemstone refractors.

Hope to see many of you there! 🪐🔭🧑‍🚀👩🏽‍🚀👨🏾‍🚀

Thom Zahler (Currency Series 1–5)

If you've ever pulled a Currency card that's like a trading-floor inside joke — Rug Pull, FOMO, Bagholders, Dead Cat Bounce — odds are good that it was drawn by Thom Zahler.

Zahler is a comic book artist and writer out of Northeast Ohio, best known for Love and Capes, his long-running superhero romantic comedy (bookstore owner dates accountant; accountant is secretly a superhero called The Crusader). He's also a frequent contributor to Topps' Star Wars trading card sets; so, unlike most of our roster, he was a card-industry pro before Currency ever existed. One quirk if you're searching the checklist: his cards are credited "Thomas Zahler."

Collector notes...

  • 30 cards across every main series (S1–S5) plus all three Holiday sets. Very few artists are so consistent across the whole line.
  • Beyond the slang cards he drew the foundational subjects too — Bitcoin, Ethereum, Satoshi Nakamoto — and S2 #40, Money Printer Go Brrrr, with Jerome Powell printing bills — a pandemic-era money meme welded to the real Fed Chair behind it. (Peak Currency!)
  • His one insert card is the S2 #MR4 Bored Apes Meta-Rare. Probably the most unique meta-rare in the franchise.
  • He sells signed and numbered 9×12 prints of his Cardsmiths card art through his online store, and penned the official Cardsmiths "Halving" promo card.

Which Zahler meme card hits hardest in your binder? Money Printer, Rug Pull, something weirder? Drop a photo.

Artist Spotlight: Shawn Dickinson (Currency Series 4)

Shawn Dickinson gave this set its oldest cartoon and its newest anxiety: Steamboat Willie at #24, Hot and Cold Wallet sharing #39. Three cards, all drawn like they came off a 1930s animation desk — which turns out to be a weirdly perfect way to draw a crypto wallet.

Dickinson is a SoCal cartoonist and illustrator whose artistic practice runs on old ink: 1930s rubber-hose cartoons, vintage comic strips, 1960s kustom kulture, pin-up art and MAD magazine. He's drawn for Fender Guitars, Shaun White's clothing line, and a long list of rock bands, and in 2016 IDW and Yoe Books collected 224 pages of it as Inks, Drinks, and Catfinks! — with cover praise from Ren & Stimpy's John Kricfalusi and animation historian Jerry Beck.

Collector notes:

  • He's a one-set artist: three cards, all Series 4. #24 Steamboat Willie, #39 Hot Wallet, #39-SP Cold Wallet. About the shortest complete artist run in Currency; you can finish him in an afternoon! Then, spend a year chasing the rainbow of one of them :)
  • Hot Wallet and Cold Wallet share card #39 — base and short print, two halves of one joke; the Cold Wallet #39-SP is the scarcer half (but also the more secure!)
  • Steamboat Willie #24 carries the RC badge, and the timing wasn't an accident: the 1928 short entered the US public domain on January 1, 2024, and Series 4 shipped that December.

🏆 Artist of the Week: Shawn Dickinson

The spotlight is yours, too! Any post this week featuring Shawn's work — your pulls, your PC, a breakdown of one card, fan art, whatever you've got — is eligible: just ensure that it has the new "Artist of the Week" flair. When the week wraps, the mod team picks a winner from the flaired posts to receive a Gemstone Refractor. EVERY post flaired this way for the next 4 weeks will also be entered into a monthly giveaway! Enter as many times as you like. Mods' pick is final.

I'm especially curious to see if anyone has collected all three in one gemstone tier, and to see people's rainbows!!

Cardsmiths Currency 2026 Convention Promo Card 👀🍏

She cute 🤣🤣🤣 (Lego not included) 💚💚💚

u/sylvan-yo — 26 days ago

My latest rendering 😳🤑❤️‍🔥 (that you, Matt P? 😉)

I met Matt P—Cardsmiths' art director, featured in our Artist Spotlight Series here a few weeks ago—at the Cardsmiths booth of the 2026 Bitcoin Conference. We bonded over the art that we both love—and he curates!—in Currency. And now there is this Cardsmiths convention card that Vince is calling the Sylvan card, and saying is super rare?? No way!!!!! ... I'm on a card, right? Right? 🤣🤣🤣💚💚💚😍😍😍 (For fun, I included some of my past renderings 🤣)

Artist Spotlight: Luke Daab (Currency Series 5)

Luke Daab gave this set both its first billionaire and its biggest fraud. Rockefeller in Series 4, Enron in Series 5. That's about as tidy a summary of American money as you'll fit on two cards.

Daab runs his own studio (Daab Creative, since 2007) out of Winfield, west of Chicago. He spent years as a contract art director on the McDonald's Happy Meal account, which meant doing licensed art for Disney, Pixar, Star Wars, Marvel, DC, Cartoon Network, Nickelodeon and Hasbro — basically the most quality-controlled brands on the planet, and it shows how cleanly his Currency cards read.

Collector notes:

  • He's a five-set artist: Series 2 through 5 plus the 2024 Holiday set, 15 cards total, but never Series 1. A proper run to chase without being endless.
  • Alongside Rockefeller (S4 #12) and Enron (S5 #75) he's got Satoshi (S2 #17), Bitcoin (S3 #60) and van Gogh (S4 #16).
  • Two short prints hide in his run: the van Gogh #16-SP, and "Lambo Now!" #23-SP — the scarcer twin of "When Lambo?" #23. Same card number, two halves of one joke, and he drew both.

If you've pulled a Daab, post it below. I'm curious whether people here chase his finance-history figures or the meme cards!!

Artist Spotlight: Rachid Lotf (Currency Series 1-6, Holiday 2023)

This week's Artist Spotlight goes to a returning Currency fan-favorite who's quietly drawn in every series so far — and who handled most of the line's marquee crypto subjects.

Who they are: Rachid Lotf is a Moroccan independent artist — a senior concept artist and graphic designer based in Agadir, Morocco. He's known outside Cardsmiths for nostalgia / retro-gaming work: hyper-detailed bedroom scenes, posters, memorabilia and pop-culture illustration packed with hidden detail. He started making nostalgic wallpapers after turning 30, inspired by his own childhood bedroom and the video games he grew up with. Confirmed commercial clients include PlayStation, Nvidia, Evercade, Mega Visions, Ikson and LA PYEL, and his work has been featured in IGN, GameInformer, PC Gamer and jeuxvideo.com — an eye for cultural detail that makes him a natural fit for a set about money and internet-economic culture.

Signature card: Series 2 #38 Bitcoin (Mona Lisa) — his take on the line's flagship subject, and the first of two adaptations of the Leonardo da Vinci masterpiece in the Currency franchise. 👀

Why it matters for collectors:

  • He's in every series. The checklists put Lotf in Series 1 through 5, the 2023 Holiday set, and now the Series 6 Preview (C6P-4 Washington Crosses the Delaware, C6P-7 Ruby Slippers) — 23 cards and counting, one of the most consistent runs in the whole line.
  • He's the line's crypto-iconography guy. Across his run he drew Bitcoin three times (S1 #9 (Bitcoin crunch), S2 #38 (Bitcoin Mona Lisa), S2 #47), Cardano, Satoshi Nakamoto (S5 #3, previewed as C5P-4 in Space Galactic Edition) and Casascius/Casacius Coins (S5 #29/29-sp) — the actual faces and coins of crypto history.
  • Top chase: his only subset-tier cards are the Series 1 Cardano Meta Rare (MR4) and its MR4A parallel — everything else of his prints in the base runs. Maybe not the top chase, but he's also given us S3 #8 Blackberry and its counterpart #8-SP Crackberry.

Pulled a Lotf card you're proud of? Drop a photo — his detail work rewards a close-up.
