I've been using Debian as my main OS for about a year, and I've tried most Debian-based and Ubuntu-based distros along the way. But I kept hitting the same issues over and over across all of them, which made me rethink my setup entirely.
Stability isn't as good as it's known to be
Debian has a reputation for solid stability, but that hasn't been my experience. I ran into many issues with my Nvidia drivers, I had to manually reinstall them every single time I updated the kernel (and yes, I tried dkms modules, but the same problem still). My gaming experience wasn't great either.
Package manager: outdated
Debian's package versions are outdated, and overall it just wasn't a pleasant experience to work with.
Random networking issues
After one update, I started getting weird IPv6-related networking problems, and YouTube suddenly stopped working for no clear reason.
My experience with DEs and tWM
When I decided to ditch traditional desktop environments for being bloated and boring (I tried KDE Plasma, GNOME, and XFCE), I moved to i3wm, I built my workflow from zero, and it was nice at first, I even did some pretty cool ricing, but suddenly I started running into a ton of configuration issues.
What I'm actually looking for:
After all this, I've landed on two things I want from a distro and a workflow:
It should let me get things done easily.
It should support aesthetic customization and ricing.
Debian was clearly lacking on the second point, and lately even the first one has been falling apart given everything I mentioned above.
Why Fedora
At first, I considered distros like Gentoo and Arch (and its derivatives). But Arch isn't known for being particularly stable or reliable, and I didn't want to deal with pacman's dependency issues either. As for Gentoo... well, it's Gentoo, no need to say more.
I also looked at Tumbleweed and openSUSE, but ended up preferring Fedora since it's a bit more modern, while it covers the two points I mentioned.
Next step: Fedora + bspwm
I'm giving tiling window managers another shot, but this time with bspwm instead of i3wm, and Fedora instead of Debian. Any tips or suggestions before I dive in?
