UConn Storrs: Live in Willimantic or commute from downtown Hartford?

I’m moving to CT for a one-year research position at UConn Storrs and expect to be on campus about 3-4 days a week.

I’m deciding between living in Willimantic or downtown Hartford. The Hartford apartment would be about $300 more per month, but it’s nicer and has an in-unit washer/dryer.

For people familiar with the area, is the Hartford to Storrs commute 4 days a week annoying and costly enough that I’d regret not living closer? Or is the drive manageable and worth it for living downtown?
Since I’ll only be there for one year, I’m trying to decide whether saving money and having a shorter commute in Willimantic is more important than having a nicer apartment and living in Hartford.

Would love to hear from anyone who has done a similar commute!

Spectra Pearl vs. Spectra Plaza - Which would you recommend?

Hi everyone,
I’m trying to decide between Spectra Pearl and Spectra Plaza and would love to hear from people who have lived in either one.

From what I’ve seen, one building has a studio that’s slightly bigger and slightly cheaper, while the other is closer to the bus stop. Other than that, I’m not sure which one is the better choice.

For those with experience:
Which building would you recommend and why?
Which one is nicer overall?
Which has better amenities and common areas?
Which feels safer?
Is one quieter or better maintained than the other?
Also, I’m trying to budget my monthly expenses.
Besides the advertised rent, what other monthly costs did you have? (Electricity, internet, parking, etc.)
About how much did you pay for electricity for a studio?
Were there any hidden or unexpected fees after moving in?

Thanks in advance for any advice!

Willimantic commuters: How often do buses run to UConn during the fall semester?

Hi,

I have a question for people who commute from Willimantic to UConn by bus.

I can only find the summer bus schedule, and it looks like the buses don’t run very frequently. Is the schedule different during the fall semester?

If you have an 8:00 a.m. class:
-What time do you usually catch the bus?
-How often do the buses run in the morning? Is the service generally reliable?

Thanks in advance!

Living in Downtown Hartford without a car? Reliable for 8 AM classes at UConn?

Hi everyone,

I’m trying to decide where to live for the upcoming semester and would really appreciate some advice.
The apartments close to Storrs campus either don’t have any one-bedroom units available, are pretty expensive, or are older and don’t include things like an in-unit washer and dryer.

I’m considering living in downtown Hartford instead, but I don’t have a car, so I’d be relying on public transportation. My classes will most likely be 3-4 days a week, and they start at 8 AM.

For those who have lived downtown:
Is public transportation reliable enough to get to an 8 AM class on time?

Has anyone had 8 AM classes while commuting by bus? How was your experience?

Would you recommend living downtown, or is it worth paying more to live closer to campus?

Even if I live closer to UCONN Storrs, I still need to rely on the bus because I don’t have a car. I’m also looking for a one-bedroom apartment since I don’t want to have roommates, and there aren’t many affordable options available right now.

I’d really appreciate any advice or personal experiences. Thanks!

Affordable places to live within 10-30 minutes of UConn Storrs?

Hi, I’m looking for affordable housing near UConn Storrs. I’ve noticed that apartments very close to campus are a bit expensive, so I’m wondering what areas people recommend within about 10-30 minutes of campus.

Ideally, I’m looking for a private studio or 1-bedroom apartment, and having laundry available would be a big plus. My budget is around $1,200/month, though I could go a little higher if the place is worth it. I don’t mind living farther from campus if there is reliable transportation to UConn.

Are there any towns, apartment complexes, or areas that you would recommend checking out? Thanks!

If anyone has recommendations, please let me know the apartment name, location, and approximate price range. Thank you!
