In praise of the Advanced Rulebook...

I just want to express how dang great the advanced rules are. I've played a lot of OPR (mainly Age of Fantasy and GDFF), but have mostly stuck with the base rules. Well, a few days ago, my buddies and I decided to buy the Advanced Rulebook and see if there's anything fun to spice up the game with. And oh my gosh does it have spice.

Advanced Terrain has faction terrain, planet/realm-specific rules, terrain generators, and more. There's narrative deployment styles, secondary objectives, fog of war, new scoring styles. There's random events, tournament guidelines, city-fighting rules, command points. There's so much.

My two big favourites have to be (1) Advanced Actions and (2) Advanced Magic. Advanced Actions really spice up the tactical decisions: Assault is a favourite for hybrid units, letting them both shoot and attack on the charge, but with a -1 penalty to each. Advanced Magic adds back the wonderful WHFB tradition of "this spell might cause you to explode", as well as the spectacularly fun Living Spells from Age of Sigmar (let me tell you, you haven't lived until you murdilate an entire swarm of clanrats with a Deathly Pendulum).

Our group has been over the moon about the additions. It really adds a lot of flavour back into the game, and is such a good way to play for folks who might think that base OPR is too simple. 10/10 BUY THE BOOK.
