I read a series today that that focused on a younger preteen/teenage Shane, from the POV of an original character.

I absolutely adored it, and it’s got me in the mood for more OC-heavy fics!

So I’d love any and all recommendations where OCs play a significant part of the story. I’m not fussy about what specific role they play - if you loved them, I want to hear about them!

(I will also take recs where it’s not an OC, per se, but such a minor character in canon that it may as well be)

Folding her laptop closed with a snap, Yuna slid it into her bag with slightly more force than needed. “He’s not exactly easy to find clothes for.”

“Yes,” Yuna agreed, brisk in the bright rays of the noonday sun. “Shane, you have your phone if you need me, right?”
“Yes, mom. My phone is charged. I remembered.” Shane’s voice cracked and a flush climbed up his throat as he stared at his shoes, twisting his hands together. Light glinted on a silver cartouche attached to a cheap cord bracelet on Shane’s wrist. The engraving read, “no days off.”
Kaz felt his heart sink. Today was Shane’s fourteenth birthday.

It’s Ilya who brings it up. He’s in his kitchen, making himself some kind of soup that Shane is already searching for recipes of—it’s called rassolnik. Leaning with one hip against the counter, he asks, “What about your sex dungeon?”

“I don’t have a sex dungeon,” Shane says, both grossed out and intrigued by the idea.

“The apartment, moya lyubov,” Ilya replies, fondness sheathed in annoyance. He slurps loudly, laughing when Shane makes a face at him over their video call. “What will you do with the apartment?”

“Sell it, maybe.”

Or, Shane doesn't sell the secret-sex-apartment building. He starts renting it out, and somehow ends up with a gaggle of Russian tenants-turned-friends, several stray cats, and one very spoiled hamster.

"Like the figure skating kickbacks were in Sochi?"

"What do you mean? Like what?" Joe asks.

"Like. I don't know. Fun?"

"Yeah? Do you go to a lot of bad parties?"

"I don't know." Shane stuffs some kale in his mouth.

"So yes."

It gets lonely at the top. In Sochi, unrivaled generational hockey talent Shane Hollander reconnects with his old skate training buddy, Joe.

From what I can remember, it took place after Scott came out - I think he partnered with the charity running the program.

The charity sets up an email pen pal program for queer professional athletes across all sports, where athletes can sign up and get paired with another athlete anonymously.

Shane and Ilya are both in the league but not together.
They both sign up for the program and get matched with each other.
