When are they ready for adoption?

We just picked up our first foster, Texas, yesterday. She’s a spunky little Australian Kelpie mix, a whopping 30 lbs and a heart bigger than her name. She’s estimated at about a year old.

I was estimating her decompression time to take several days, but honestly, she’s pretty damn decompressed! She’s quickly made herself comfortable at our home and with our dogs, and her little personality has been in full force since the minute we got home. I think she’s just young, confident, and resilient, so we are moving quickly past decompression and into standard confidence building and pup training.

I figured she’d need a few weeks (3?) before being posted for adoption - now I’m honestly contemplating if she could start searching for her forever home sooner, within the next week and a half or so.

How soon is “too-soon”? Do you have a standard time you wait for your pups before starting adoption? Have you had any quick turnaround experiences like this?

Signed up to foster - asked to adopt.

My husband and I (M, 34 & F, 32) have two dogs currently - one border collie mix and one viszla/shar pei mix. Both are rescues, but the latter was adopted from a local organization two years ago.

We’ve been casually exploring expanding the pack, and thought fostering could be a good way to help out while providing our younger dog with some friend opportunities during the foster.

As we were selecting a foster dog, I found one that seemed like a great first fit - I reached out a few times to select him, but they didn’t reply. He ultimately was placed with another foster before the org replied to me.

I’ve been trying to select another dog in need, but I can’t explain it - my heart won’t let that first pup go. I emailed my contact and asked if we could outright adopt him instead, apologizing that I had originally intended to foster but this lil guy would fit well with us. I haven’t received a reply.

CONTEXT: the pup is still in another state so hasn’t been brought in by the org yet. He’s been “placed” with a foster for the pickup services, but no physical placement has happened yet.

I can be dense sometimes and this is my first time working with an org that fosters (on this side of it). Is it weird or not okay to ask to adopt outright in these situations?
