💜 Volunteer Notes

I met Lucy in October and she was one of my favorites to think she was failed again and now is in this situation with so many babies makes me sick to my stomach. These are the horror stories the shelter is trying to prevent and yet it happened anyways.

October 2024: I love Lucy. I'm not talking about the show I'm talking about this perfect puppers. She knows how to put on the charm that's for sure. Anyone that greets her gets the same sweet greeting where she gives a smile and looks all cute. She was easy to leash and didn't have any problem walking by any of the dogs. She played with a pup in the run and loved running back and forth. She enjoys belly rubs and playing which is the perfect package in my opinion. She knows how to relax and knows how to have fun. I saw several people have her out today and every time they brought her back she just would relax in her kennel. She's so quiet! I'm surprised no one has snatched this girl up yet.

📝 Shelter Notes:

October 2024

Approaching kennel, dog was sitting down in the front. I opened the door and she then pancaked, keeping her head low.

I placed the leash but dog remained in potion so I then slowly entered and got behind her, as I was picking her up I could hear that she was softly crying. I carried her outside the kennel and then placed her on floor. As I was petting and baby talking her, she wagged her tail and looked at me with soft eyes. As I was petting her head, she would gently close her eyes and lick her lips, and get closer to my legs. After spending a minute with her, she followed me and walked loosely with a wagging tail. She occasionally would freeze and look at me with soft eyes and a wagging tail, I had to baby talk and pet her again for her to continue walking. While outside, I squatted down again and she quickly came forward to sit next to me. While petting her outside, she got on her back with tummy up and was enjoying the belly rubs with closed eyes and a smile.

Coming back inside, she walked with a more relaxed body. After placing her in kennel, I closed the door and then started to pet her through door. She sat in placed licking her lips and closing her eyes in comfort as I petted her head. She was super and friendly towards me,

In the afternoon I was able to take her outside so she could have more outside time and adjust to the outside setting since in the morning she was a bit timid. Again, she slowly walked on the leash and needed a lot of encouragement to walk. She often pulled back but I was able to redirect her with with baby talk and pets. She ignored treats and baby talk seemed to be working better with her. When coming back inside she walked on a loose leash, still occasionally stopping. Again, responding super well to being pet, loves the attention.

dog was laying down and when i approched dog had whale eyes and as i got closer dog had lowered head down and as i opened the kennel door wider for dog to get out she pancaked and i had to carry out and carry to next kennel.

spoke to potential adopter about her delay in surgery due to URI. Was told that we had noticed that she was limping and upon looking at the radiographs on her RF there was a healing fracture. She was told that she would be going home on carprofen and doxy for her to give at home. She still wanted to move forward with the adoption.

My most recent rescue, a little Beagle Mama

Last summer, right before a huge thunderstorm, this little mama beagle showed up in the alley behind my house with 2 puppies in tow. No collars. The pups ran right up to me, but mama was so spooked that she ran off, and the puppies followed her. Then it absolutely downpoured, and I couldn't get them out of my head. I told my boyfriend about her, and he said to stop worrying... I still drove around the neighborhood looking for them for days.

Only when I had given up looking, exactly one week later, they showed up again.

My other rescue is not friendly to other dogs, so I sent her to stay with my parents for the weekend, while I got to work finding homes for these boy pups. I fittingly named them Shiloh and Scout. Unsurprisingly, their forever families were easy to find. But I couldn't let go of mama.

When I tried to soft introduce her to my dog
Honeybun, they were both immediately reactive so l was about to give up, when Mama yeeted herself over her baby gate, rolled onto her back underneath Honeybun, and showed her belly like, "listen sister, I am NOT here to fight you"
And that was it.

Now they sunbathe together, beg for pup cups together, wear matching sweaters, and have developed a very amicable sister rivalry. Mama has the longest ears, the biggest personality, and a beagle howl WAY too loud to be coming from her little sausage body. She has also claimed the kitchen windowsill as her spot, and spends half the day perched there waiting for her husband to return from war…(MY boyfriend, who won't even be gone that long). I do get plenty of cuddles and kisses, but I am undeniably the spare human. Yes you read that right, I rescued both of these girls and yet they are beyond obsessed with my boyfriend. But I wouldn't trade them for anything. There is nothing like a bond with a rescue.

Tell me about your rescue? Who is their person? What makes them quirky? What nicknames do they have? Does anyone else also sing original parodies of songs to their dogs? Because we definitely have a rendition of Party Rock called "party beagles in the house tonight". My scrappy beagle from the alley absolutely brought light into our family. What about yours?

[SoCal] Rocko was surrendered as a “14-year-old” and put on the euthanasia list. He’s actually 7 and still waiting for his forever home 💔

Rocko was surrendered by the only family he ever knew last October. His owners told the shelter he was 14 years old (turns out he’s actually closer to 7), which sadly put him on the euthanasia list almost immediately.

We pulled him from the shelter and thought finding him a home would be easy because he is honestly such a sweet, goofy, loving AmStaff/pit bull mix. But somehow… after 7 months in foster care, Rocko has received ZERO applications 💔

This week, we decided our goodest boy deserved a bigger investment in his future, so Rocko is officially enrolled in Redemption Tails’ Board & Train program with the incredible behaviorist/trainer Nhut Vo in Santa Ana, CA.

He’ll spend the next 3 weeks learning, decompressing, building confidence, and showing everyone what we already know: that underneath everything, Rocko is just a big velvet hippo who wants love and stability.

Rocko is neutered, fully vaccinated, and ready for his forever home. He would thrive with someone willing to continue giving him structure, patience, and love.

If you’d like to learn more about Rocko or set up a meet-and-greet, please message me or email inquiries@akiraanimalrescue.org 🩶

10month old Charisma is on euthanasia risk at anytime as of 5/17 ‼️ NYC Shelter

Please Comment share pledge foster adopt rescue

https://www.facebook.com/share/p/18kxKfYBLz/?mibextid=wwXIfr

IN GRAVE DANGER - EUTH COMMAND

“I’m Charisma… though right now I know that name doesn’t seem to fit me. I used to be different — playful, cuddly, always pressed against my person because that’s where I felt safe. But then everything changed. My parent got sick, then lost our home, and the day we said goodbye I cried into their shirt while they cried into my fur. I didn’t understand why we couldn’t stay together. I still don’t. I just know they loved me, and I loved them, and then suddenly I was alone.

Here in the shelter I’m so scared that my whole body shakes. I hide in the corner of my kennel because it’s the only place that feels small enough to hold all my fear. When people try to take me out, I panic — my legs won’t move, my body freezes, and sometimes I thrash because I don’t know what else to do. I’m not trying to be difficult. I’m just a ten‑month‑old puppy who lost everything and doesn’t know how to be brave yet.

But underneath all this trembling is the real me — the girl who loves to cuddle, who follows her people from room to room, who gives soft kisses and wiggles when she trusts you. I’m playful with dogs I know, gentle with the people I love, and I want so badly to feel safe again. I just need time… time to decompress, time to learn the world isn’t ending, time to remember that I’m still a puppy with a whole life ahead of me.

The shelter says I’m “not acclimating,” and now I’m on the list to die. I don’t want my story to end here. I don’t want my parent — wherever they are, probably still struggling — to find out that I am gone forever. I want a quiet, patient, adult home where someone will kneel beside me, speak softly, and let me come forward when I’m ready. Someone who sees past the shaking and understands that fear is not who I am — it’s just what happened to me.

Please… I’m only ten months old. I’m healthy. I’m loving. I’m trying. I just need someone to save my life and give me the chance to become the dog my name promises.”

Experienced fosters and adopters, we need you to step up for this baby girl who did nothing wrong. She’s lost it all, the parent she loved, the home she felt safe and loved in, and now she may lose her own life. It’s unfair. MESSAGE OUR PAGE to save her life now.

She moves to a corner of her kennel when handlers attempt to leash her, thrashing once leashed, and refuses to leave her kennel or walk once out. Her previous owner stated that she did not allow any form of grooming, including nail trims. And she was fearful when restrained and when her collar is grabbed. Please see handouts on Decompression period and Handling/touch sensitivity.

Anxiety: Charisma is reported to be anxious in the previuos home, but her owner did not elaborate on how this behavior manifested or if any steps were taken to modify these behaviors. If Charisma displays anxious behavior in her future home, we recommend puzzle toys, long walks, and giving her other things to focus on to alleviate her anxiety. Positive reinforcement, force-free training only should be used. Please see hadnout on generalized anxiety.

On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration: Charisma is reported to bark and growl at moving objects during walks. Please see handout on On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration.
