I painted the usual layers: Acrylic base, clear acrylic lacquer with candy pearl mixed in, then one layer of rattle can clear. I never had any issues with this combination but this time I decided to use a different than usual pearl. And this seems to be the problem as the clear layer which normally dries within 10 minutes, was tacky 3 days later. Moreover, the following day I noticed that the engine cover has ripples all over - look very much like too much paint when it isn't.

It's 2 weeks later and it's still a bit sticky and loses its shine anywhere I touch it, no matter if I'm wearing gloves or not.

I decided to assemble it and buff it with a soft cloth to make it a bit more shiny. And then I took a few photos. I'll scrap this paint and respray once again but this time probably with a regular, tested and proven metallic acrylic.

Oh, by the way because I almost forgot: It's Nissan MID4 first prototype. This particular diecast is made by MC Toy / Maisto.

1960s Zeiss Sonnar "zebra" 135/4 repair and two questions.

Hi, I recently bought an EXA mount Sonnar with the usual defect - stuck aperture. After I removed the mount plate I noticed a tiny hair spring lying near the aperture mechanism:

How I found it. Also, I think the long spring is incorrectly installed. Had to reposition it for the aperture to work properly.

Closeup of the spring. This is a metric square BTW.

I can't find service manuals nor YT videos for this one and I have no idea where this spring should be installed. I also noticed that the aperture doesn't fully open - I think that whoever disassembled the lens before, had put it back not exactly as it should be.

This is the maximum the aperture opens.

As a result, two questions:

  1. Do you know where and how to install this tiny spring?
  2. Should the aperture fully open or is this the maximum for this lens and everything's fine?

Thanks in advance.

BTW, the aperture works again and the lens is currently waiting to be assembled.

Salvageable? 100 y/o Gritzner sewing machine table.

Last year I managed to buy what appears to be a Gritzner V sewing machine with a table and cast iron legs. I already restored the legs and put a different, more modern top on them, but this table - I don't know what to do with it.

  • There are places where the veneer and inlays are worn to the bare wood beneath.
  • All the corners - inside and outside are either worn or damaged.
  • Some of the veneer is not glued.
  • Wood is chipping here and there.
  • Both drawers need complete rebuild.
  • Stains. Everywhere.
  • 2/3 of the wood has house borer holes.

Should I start one of these never ending "projects" and try to restore it or just scrap it and build a new table?

BTW, the machine is still in working condition after 100 years. It's been in use until 2010s, when previous owner's parents died.

New shop, old stock.

Went to a newly opened Pepco in the area and found plenty of these hanging on pegs. Obviously, no TH nor STH (or it's just me being blind) but a lot of Ferrari, Porsche and other mains that usually disappear first. Thought I'd grab what I couldn't get last year.
