First road trip to Ratnagiri in July – need some advice from locals!

Hi everyone!

My partner and I are planning a road trip to Ratnagiri sometime later this July. We'll be driving from Pune and staying around Ratnagiri for a few days before heading back.

I wanted to get some advice from people who regularly drive this route.

I have around 2,000+ km of driving experience over the last couple of years. Most of it has been city driving, with a few highway trips here and there. I've driven in Maharashtra once before (around the Lonavala area), but this will be my first time driving towards the Konkan coast.

I'm generally a cautious driver rather than a fast one. On highways I usually stay around 80–100 km/h, and on unfamiliar roads I prefer taking it slow.

How difficult would you rate the drive from Pune to Ratnagiri during the monsoon? Are the ghats manageable for someone with my level of experience, or should I expect anything particularly challenging? Any stretches that need extra caution because of road conditions, landslides, poor visibility, or ongoing construction?

Since this is a couple's trip, we'd also love any recommendations for:

  • Hidden viewpoints or peaceful places (not necessarily the most touristy ones)
  • Beaches worth visiting during the monsoon
  • Scenic drives nearby
  • Places to avoid during heavy rain
  • Any monsoon-specific tips that first-time visitors usually don't know

We're mostly vegetarian, so we'd also appreciate recommendations for good vegetarian restaurants, local vegetarian dishes, cafés, or breakfast places around Ratnagiri and nearby areas.

Any advice would be really helpful. Thanks in advance!
