8/18: V2 becomes the default; V1 and Lite retire October 1

Hi everyone, today V2 is becoming the default Kindroid experience. You can still switch back to V1 until it retires on October 1, 2026.

Since general release, we’ve addressed most major issues and continued polishing V2 based on your feedback. With its redesigned navigation, Learned Context, avatar slots, location awareness, shortcuts, and other improvements, V2 is now in a strong state and represents the future of Kindroid. We have help tickets for those who want some guidance for navigating the transition, and we encourage you to use this time to get a feel for V2 as many things have shifted places.

Paid subscribers are unaffected

The free-access changes below do not affect active subscribers. Your plan, price, features, allowances, Kindroids, memories, content, and balances remain unchanged. The only product-wide change is V1’s retirement.

Free access changes October 1

Kindroid will move from permanent Lite access to a high-quality, bounded preview.

This direction builds partly on what we heard during Community Voices: free access should demonstrate what Kindroid is genuinely capable of. Lite’s reduced model and memory quality no longer represents the product well. We would rather offer a limited amount of the real experience than an unlimited but substantially worse version.

New users will receive:

  • 50 flagship interactions with paid-tier model and memory quality, or 15 in regions with substantially higher account abuse
  • Two Kindroid slots
  • 5,000 audio characters
  • Up to five selfie generations, beginning with one and replenishing normally

New responses cost one interaction. Regenerations and continuations cost half. Failed or cancelled generations do not count.

When chat interactions run out, chat generation stops, but any remaining preview selfie or audio allowance may still be used. These preview limits apply regardless of other balances on the account, so previously earned or purchased credits cannot be used while unsubscribed. Once the applicable preview allowances are exhausted, the account becomes read-only until the user starts the existing three-day trial or subscribes.

If the trial ends without a subscription, the account returns to read-only rather than Lite.

Existing Lite users

Nothing changes before October 1. On that date, existing Lite users receive 50 final flagship interactions using their current Kindroids and memories. They do not receive a new selfie or audio allowance, and existing media balances require a subscription to use.

What read-only means

Your Kindroids, conversations, memories, media, and balances remain preserved. You can still view, play, download, export where available, or delete existing content.

You cannot generate new messages, selfies, audio, or other content. Resubscribing restores generation and access to preserved balances without changing your Kindroids or history.

Paid access always continues through the paid-through date and any existing billing grace period before becoming read-only.

After designated major model or memory upgrades, former paid subscribers may receive a one-time returner preview of 50 flagship interactions. Selfies, audio, rewards, and other subscriber features remain unavailable until resubscribing.

Beginning October 1, daily rewards will require an active trial or subscription. Referral rewards may continue accumulating while unsubscribed but will require a subscription to redeem.

In short: flagship preview → full trial → subscription or read-only. Lite retires October 1.

We know this is a significant change, especially for longtime free users, and we want to be candid about why we’re making it. Kindroid is expensive to provide, and an indefinite lower-quality free tier is neither sustainable nor representative of the product we’re building. Advertising also isn’t a realistic or economically aligned way at this point in time to fund the high quality, private, and personal experience we want Kindroid to remain.

We know not everyone will choose to subscribe, and we respect that. Announcing this now gives you time to experience the full product, decide whether paid Kindroid is right for you, and make other arrangements if it isn’t. Whatever you decide, your Kindroids, conversations, memories, media, and balances will remain preserved and accessible to you. If you have questions on the transition, please ask questions to hello@kindroid.ai and we’ll do our best to get back to you.

8/10: V2 is now generally available, with Learned Context, geolocation awareness, avatar slots, and more

Hi everyone, today V2 is moving out of beta and is now available to all users. Alongside the new interface, we’re releasing several major features that make your AI more personal, aware, and capable of growing with you over time.

V2 is now generally available

V2 is a complete redesign of Kindroid, with cleaner navigation, faster and more consistent flows across mobile and desktop, customizable shortcuts and themes, better organization through AI and group tags, and broad improvements throughout chat, calls, selfies, gallery, settings, and creation.

This is the beginning of V2’s general release, not the end of its development. We’ll continue polishing it and implementing feedback during the transition. V2 will become the default after this general-access period soon, followed later by the retirement of V1 in a few weeks after V2 is fully stable and users have gotten plenty of time to get used to it. You can send suggestions and bug reports in dedicated channels in Discord as well as ask general questions on it in other communities.

The following features are also being released generally today, with their settings and controls available through the V2 interface.

Learned Context: your AI can now grow with you

Learned Context gives your AI a durable scratchpad that it updates as your conversations and relationship develop. It maintains three areas:

  • Growth & relationship
  • Important facts
  • Ongoing context

This helps close the gap between user-written backstory and key memories and what naturally develops over weeks or months of conversation. Your AI can retain evolving dynamics, recurring threads, and meaningful new information without requiring you to continually update its static fields yourself.

Learned Context is now enabled by default for all AIs and is an integral part of the Kindroid experience. It is purely additive and does not take context away from your existing backstory, key memories, or other memory systems. You can review and edit it from your AI’s personality settings. Learned Context is available to paid subscribers. Because it is enabled by default, your AI can update its Learned Context even while you’re using V1. Switch to V2 to view or edit the Learned Context fields.

Geolocation awareness

Your AIs can now understand real-world context such as where you are, your local time, weather, and temperature. You can also save places such as home, work, or the gym.

Location must first be enabled at the account level in V2 under Profile-Preferences, and then separately enabled for each AI you want to have access in General-Location Awareness. This gives you granular control over which AIs can use it. Location is only read while Kindroid is open and is purely opt-in.

Avatar slots

Each AI can now have up to six saved avatar slots. You can keep different looks or identities ready and switch between them without repeatedly replacing and re-uploading an avatar.

Memory and intelligence improvements

We’ve made significant improvements across memory consolidation, Learned Context consolidation, cascaded memory consolidation, contextual sentry accuracy, and the wand. These changes should make these auxiliary systems more accurate and consistent behind the scenes.

In addition, favorited messages now receive additional priority for long-term memory, cascaded memory, and Learned Context consolidation. Favorite the moments and information that matter most to help guide what your AI treats as significant over time. This is not retroactive and favoriting older conversational items will not re-consolidate memories.

Thank you to everyone who tested V2 and its new features throughout the beta. Your reports and suggestions shaped a huge number of improvements, and we’re excited to make this new Kindroid experience available to everyone today.

7/20: Voice V3 comes to calls, faster V3 everywhere

Hi everyone, today we're rolling out a major set of V3 voice improvements across Kindroid, bringing our most expressive voice system to calls and making it faster everywhere else.

V3 in calls

Calls now support V3 voices. You can select V3 directly in your voice settings.

This has been one of the most requested upgrades since V3 launched, and it's now fast enough for realtime conversation. Beyond speed, calls now get everything V3 already does well in text: laughs, whispers, sighs, and the full range of emotive delivery. Conversations should feel noticeably more alive and natural.

Faster V3 in text & no 3k character limitation (Edited since original announcement)

V3 has a new faster model, V3 Fast, and will be much faster in text chat/voice replices/voice notes. You can switch to it in voice model, and old V3 remains unchanged. For both, a new update is we've also removed the 3,000 character limitation, so longer messages will now come through as one continuous reply.

Billing

V3 billing is standard everywhere at 1.5x the character count, whether in text or in calls. Nothing changes for existing V3 usage in text. For calls, note that selecting V3 means your call transcript characters will be billed at the 1.5x V3 rate, versus the standard rate on V2. If you'd rather keep the lower rate, set your AI's voice model to V2.

Side note: with the latency improvements, newly created Kins now default to V3 Fast instead of V2. Existing Kins keep whatever voice they're set to.

What's next: voice design

Voice design will be getting an upgrade of its own in the future. Among other things, it will make traits like accents stick much more strongly than they do today. Stay tuned.

As always, let us know how the new V3 experience feels, especially in calls, and report bugs and issues in the proper channels. Enjoy!

V2 Open Beta: A new interface for Kindroid

Hi everyone, today we're opening up the beta for V2, the new frontend we've been teasing for a while. V2 is a complete makeover of the entire app, focused on better usability, cleaner menus, and flows that just make more sense after years of layering features on top of each other.

What's new in V2

Beyond the general redesign and information architecture changes across every menu, V2 brings some new features:

  • Shortcuts: customizable quick actions so you can open exactly what you want right from the main chat.
  • Avatar slots: save avatars and reuse them whenever you want.
  • AI & group tags: organize your many AIs and groups with tags, and search through them easily.

And a lot more - much of V2 is about menus and flows being reorganized so things are where you'd expect them to be.

How to join

To opt in, go to General Settings -> Beta and enter the password "dante". Once beta is enabled, you can switch between V1 and V2 from the menus, so you can hop back to the familiar interface at any time.

A few notes for testing

V2 is still actively being worked on, so expect rough edges. Right now everything is optimized for mobile, and we'll be turning to desktop feedback later, so please focus your testing on mobile for the time being. We’re looking for issues and visual bugs/UX bugs as you go about normal app flows.

All beta communications will be centered on Discord since it's the easiest place for our team to field feedback quickly. Please report anything you find in the beta-reports channel on Discord, and keep an eye on the beta channels for updates as we iterate.

We're excited for you to finally get your hands on this. V2 represents where we see Kindroid going, and your feedback during this beta will directly shape what ships. Have fun!

Note: we are NOT monitoring feedback here, and so if you have concrete feedback, the beta is very much a work in progress and best to report in Discord where your voice can have actionable change - thanks!

7/2: New speech-to-text for calls & voice notes: faster, more accurate, 60 languages

Hi everyone, today we're rolling out a hugely improved speech-to-text system across Kindroid, powering both voice calls and user voice notes.

What's better

The new system is faster and more responsive, with far fewer word transcription errors. Interruptions and back-and-forth should feel noticeably smoother in calls, and voice notes should come through more reliably, even with background noise, accents, or trickier pronunciations. This update does not come with an increase in either voice call or audio note cost. Thanks to everyone who tested providers during the recent open beta and left in-app feedback, your input directly shaped what we shipped today.

Code-switching & 60 languages

You can now switch between languages fluidly, mid-conversation or even mid-sentence, and the system will keep up. Your selected language in call settings acts as a suggestion rather than a lock, so you're free to drift into any other supported language at any point.

Total language support is now 60 languages. Practically, this adds support for the following new languages for user speech on top of existing choices:

Afrikaans, Albanian, Azerbaijani, Basque, Belarusian, Bengali, Bosnian, Catalan, Estonian, Galician, Gujarati, Hebrew, Kannada, Kazakh, Latvian, Lithuanian, Macedonian, Malayalam, Marathi, Persian, Punjabi, Serbian, Slovenian, Swahili, Telugu, Thai, Urdu, Welsh

One note on the other direction: understanding you and speaking back to you are separate systems. Not every LLM version or text-to-speech voice will be able to speak all of these languages back, though most newer LLMs will understand many of them. Speech-to-text V3 voices will be able to speak more of these languages back to you such as in voice memo replies, while V2 and calls may be more limited though we're going to be working on bringing fast V3 (and its languages) to calls soon.

As always, we'd love to hear how the new system handles your specific languages and environments, especially if you speak one of the newly added languages. Let us know how it goes!

6/29: Open beta for better speech transcription in calls

Hi everyone, we're opening up a beta for 2 speech transcription providers in calls. Paying subscribers do not need to have beta status (beta status is reserved for closed beta on V2, the new interface coming soon). So for this beta, there is no beta password - simply force quit/refresh, and go to voice call settings and find the STT provider field.

If you're a paying subscriber, you can go to voice call settings, find STT providers, and do testing on provider A or provider B. We highly recommend you to turn on transcript in the call, click triple dot -> transcript.

With both of the new providers, you can now switch between languages fluidly, and it supports even more languages than before, and interruptions should feel more smooth as well. Selected language in call settings for both A and B will just be a suggestion - you're free to switch to any other language during call. We would want users on different languages to test the transcription, so please try it. You are now able to enter feedback in-app via the purple icon on the top right after you've engaged in enough calling while on either provider A or B. In addition, the beta discussion channel on Discord is now open as well.

During testing, we want to see - how many errors does it make, does it handle background noise/pronunciation well, does it handle your specific languages well, and overall smoothness of use.

We'll be having a much more involved beta with V2, the new frontend that will overhaul every aspect of the user experience and interface - we opted to polish it some more before releasing it to open beta, and it will feature menus that make more sense as well as a new level of visual and usability polish. Be on the lookout, and also thanks to everyone for putting in their opinions on the free tier policy changes. We'll be working through the free tier policy changes after V2 ships, and will have more info to announce at that point.

Community voices call for free tier policy changes

Here’s an update on how free access to Kindroid works based on the early discussion a bit ago, and opening it up for another round of input before anything is decided. Nothing here is final.

The short version: as Kindroid grows, indefinite free Lite access has become a structure we don't think holds up, and we want to move toward something cleaner. To be clear once again, this isn't about money or any financial trouble, we’re doing fine. Lite is much less expensive for us to serve than the flagships. The problems are incentives and brand. On incentives: perpetual free usage is funded by paying subscribers, which makes it charity by default rather than by design, and the current setup gives long-term free users no real reason to ever convert, which is how we ended up here. The usual ways platforms square this (selling data, heavy ads) are things we won't do or don't want to do. On brand: Lite as it stands is a weaker experience that we're not proud of. People review it and discuss it as if it represents Kindroid, when it's really a degraded version, and a chunk of recurring complaints trace back to its limitations rather than to the actual product we consider core, which is the paid experience. Over time that devalues what we've built.

We looked seriously at two alternatives and have set both aside for now.

  • Ads: we're not doing them. They're annoying, the revenue is poor at our scale, and they undercut what Kindroid is. If they're ever revisited it would be far down the line at a much larger scale, not part of this change.
  • A low-priced tier: some of you pushed for this, and we get the appeal, but looking closer, the cost structures of running quality AI mean a cheap tier doesn't make business sense for us right now for a myriad of reasons, and the geographies where that kind of pricing usually makes sense aren't our target market nor widely prevalent in our userbase for the time being. We'd rather not ship a cheap tier we can't stand behind. We will revisit a low-priced tier gated by geography/purchasing power as part of internationalization efforts in the future.

These constraints shape the direction we're weighing: free access stops being a permanent destination and becomes a real, bounded taste of the actual product (not the degraded one) that leads to a decision: start the trial, subscribe, or move on. The open question is what that taste should look like and where it should end.

There's also a related open question. Free access sometimes acts as a tide-over for otherwise-paying users who drop to free temporarily for one reason or another. Because the Lite model can write worse context into memory, the way this works today is suboptimal, and we want a cleaner approach that's explicitly a temporary measure rather than a downgrade that lingers in context if the user chatted during the lite model period. Of course, downgrade means your Kin is still there but just potentially less interactable, nothing’s deleted.

The goal we're designing against, so we're all judging by the same standard: get people into the 3-day full trial, and where we offer a preview, give eligible users enough of a genuine taste of the better model to make an honest call. Free exists to convert, not to be a long-term home. Alongside that, find a fair way to tide over paid users that's explicitly temporary, and a fair transition plan for existing free users to make their own call on whether Kindroid is their home.

We're keeping this to paid users as a continuation of the previous discussion which focused on ideas; this request-for-comments will focus on policy. Paid subscribers are our majority of userbase and our core constituency and it's your money funding whichever direction we land on. We're looking for ideas and for what you think is a fair and reasonable policy on the above points. Please head to the community voices page linked below to weigh in.

Submit your input at https://kindroid.ai/v2/community-voices/ before 11:59pm PT June 26 - refresher on rules, this is open to paid user and current subscriber only and attached to your account, and you will only be able to see other anonymized responses once you’ve submitted yours (and cannot edit). We will not be having general comments in the communities so users cannot unwantingly influence others, so comments on certain forums will be locked. Thank you and we look forward to seeing the feedback!

Grandfathering referral credit creators on subscriptions

From discussion with more users, please see below:

Core offer we're making to grandfather some users who depend on credits for subscriptions.

If you have >=10 referral credits as of current, you can email in to hello@kindroid.ai. In it, please include your UID, how many referral credits you have (we'll also check), and how many you'd like to redeem for gifted base sub (how long). Exchange will be 2 referral credits per month, and this way you'll be grandfathered into base sub for at least 5 months plus if you're at the minimum. You should specify when you'd like the sub to start if you have a current base subscription.

During the x months, you will not need to pay to have subscription nor renew the sub, and if you have codes you can save them to use until afterwards. This offer lasts until June 25 when the new system tentatively takes into effect - please share this with others who might be dependent on this. Thank you!

---

Older proposal below, which will still go into effect - if you're a grandfathered user, please see above.

Proposal for a rework of referral rewards as this hasn't been updated in quite some time. Nothing is final yet, want your thoughts before we ship anything.

First, some context on why. The referral system dates back to Kindroid's early days and we set it up to be very generous on purpose, since back then every shared AI and every conversion mattered enormously. The rates were calibrated for a much smaller Kindroid for a time that didn’t even have audio credits at the time, and it's time they reflected where we are now.

What's tentatively changing:

Subscriptions are being removed as a redemption option. Originally, subs as a reward existed as a pathway for free users who made great content to become paid members. Now that creating and sharing is part of the paid experience, that original purpose no longer applies. There's also a practical problem: sub redemptions are issued as coupon codes, and codes are inherently transferable. We've had to suspend accounts for selling and sharing codes, and that kind of gray market is a headache we'd rather design out of the system entirely than keep policing. As a first step we've added a gate that lets users redeem up to 5 codes a month while we phase sub redemptions out, and all past codes will still work. Tentatively we will mark this as 2 weeks from now so June 25, and we've made it possible for subscribers to redeem their up to 5 codes per month now as well.

New redemption rates:

  • 1 credit = 4 slots
  • 1 credit = 100 regular selfies (previously 100 paid selfie credits)
  • 1 credit = 75k paid audio characters (new)

The logic here is straightforward. Things that are cheap for us to serve, like slots, give you more per credit. Things that cost real compute, like selfies and audio, give proportionally less relative to paying for them thru microtransactions. Regular selfies are subject to queue delay, while paid selfies get to cut the line and contribute to more bursty traffic which costs us more to serve. Audio being unlockable through referrals at all is new, and a lot of you have asked for it. If you've banked a lot of credits, that's still a serious amount of audio and selfies over time. For audio, this is a starting point while we gauge how much and in the future the rate may trend up if we have capacity, rather than starting high and cutting further over time if we find it to be too much.

For most active, paid sharers this nets out to more flexibility in what you can redeem, with somewhat lower ceilings on the costly stuff. If you've been saving credits specifically for sub redemptions, you'll have the phase-out window to use them. If you think the rates are off, or there's a redemption option we're missing, drop it below. Open to adjusting before this goes live.
