America the Broken

I based this map on the "what if" scenario that Washington DC and the primary federal infrastructure were fissioned out of existence one day in the mid-'90s. Immediately after, the individual states would likely try to continue operating independently, but very quickly the uneven distribution of resources across the country would cause each region to start forming new joint governments with their neighbors. Existing borders would blur along the lines of supplies and major utilities, and natural borders would become more sustainable. It doesn't immediately turn into all out civil war. Trade, treaties, and annexation likely would be just as prevalent in the reshaping of the nation.

Feel free to ask me questions or tell me all the ways you think I'm crazy. I think I have decently valid reasons for the more extreme decisions, but I'd love to know why I'm wrong.

Americans, how would your state break apart?

I am working on an alternate history map in which the US breaks apart and the individual states steadily break down and merge to become completely new countries (balkanization). I've tried to focus pretty heavily on both redrawing borders along natural boundaries like rivers and mountains, but also on resource and supply lines, like power grids and shipping routes. Of course cultural differences would be an obvious point of interest as well, but I think that actually becomes less important when people are more focused on how they feed their families.

With that context, there are a number of states that I feel their borders would change slightly as different areas become more likely to align with neighboring states. That being the case I wanted to get the opinions of people that live in each of the states as to how they think their state might break up in that scenario. Obviously that wouldn't be the case with every single state, but I'm also aware that I wouldn't necessarily be aware of any local geography or social issues that might cause a serious division.

If your state became severely divided into 2 or 3 different pieces, what would they be and what would define the borders? Also, would they be likely to align with any of the neighboring states?
