I have been offered a pretty big promotion at my job. It’s a very important role for the company right now and is high visibility with direct interaction with the executive leadership team. They came to me with it which is incredibly flattering. This made me feel really good.

My issue is that my current team is in the middle of standing up a bunch of initiatives that have huge revenue growth potential for the company. I’m the manager of the team and we have worked extremely hard to get to this point and have really turned around the department trajectory as well as the culture. Two of my direct reports are likely to be leaving this team as well. This makes me feel terrible for the department and the fact that the initiatives I mentioned would struggle to see the light of day. Additionally, I feel terrible for leaving the rest of the team in a tough spot with a huge work load and down 3 key people.

I would love to hear people’s serious perspective on this.
