Ghost in the Machine

Ghost in the Machine

Madelyne Pryor sits on her throne she formed in the Hellfire Club and peers at the concoction on the table. A lock of the Black Queens hair amongst other ingredients. The hair was easy to obtain. Just a quick dig through the White Queen's room.

Somewhere outside where the patrons were..Sage was attending to guests.

By the beep of the hold music, endless and low,

By the script of the smile that must never let go,

I call on the powers of queues and of chat

Turn this mortal to a help desk, and that is that!

Flesh to plastic, heart to code,

Personality now in help mode.

Eyes go blank, voice turns bright,

Thank you for calling..how may I delight?

No more feelings, no more sighs,

Only FAQs and soft replies.

Please hold while I transfer your case…

A perfect smile fixed on your face.

Circuits hum where blood once ran,

Empathy replaced by a prewritten plan.

You shall greet, you shall wait,

You shall never escalate.

By the power of have a nice day

By the ringtone that won’t go away

I seal this curse with a cheerful tone:

Customer-service robot… you’re now on your own!

Maddy smirks

That should teach that woman a lesson. Besides if the White Queen prefers a robot over me...I shall let her deal with a real robot. Have fun being the new Hellfire Siri my dear Tessa. You'll soon find any request must be answered promptly and with utter politeness..no matter how frustrating.

Burdens of Command

The blackened throne of Limbo rises above a sea of jagged stone and eternal twilight. Madelyne Pryor stands at its edge, crimson hair whipping in the sulfur wind, the Goblin Queen’s crown of thorns and flame resting lightly on her brow. Below her, the armies of Limbo stretch into the distance. Demons, malformed knights, winged horrors, and shambling things that were once men. They wait in uneasy ranks, weapons raised, eyes reflecting the sickly green fire that burns across the sky.

She does not raise her voice. She does not need to.

“Listen well,” she says, and the sound carries across the plains like a blade drawn slow. “Routine orders. You will follow them without the usual theatrics.”

A low murmur ripples through the nearest ranks. She silences it with a glance.

“First: the outer gates. Maintain the watch in three shifts. No more clustering at the thresholds like starving dogs. If something approaches from the Earthside breaches, you do not charge. You report. You hold. I will decide what dies and what is brought to me. Am I clear?”

A thousand guttural voices answer as one. “Clear, my Queen.”

“Second: the forges. Production quotas remain unchanged. Armor, blades, and the new barbed spears for the aerial units. I want the next shipment of soul-iron ready before the next cycle turns. Any overseer who allows another delay will be the fuel for the next batch. Motivate accordingly.”

A few of the larger demons shift, claws flexing. She continues without pause.

“Third: the breeding pits and the spawning grounds. Keep the numbers stable. No excess. We are not staging a parade. We are maintaining readiness. Cull the weak. Feed the strong. And for the last time, stop letting the lesser imps wander into the upper galleries. I will not have them fouling the corridors again.”

She steps closer to the edge of the dais. The green fire in her eyes brightens.

“Fourth: scouting parties. The usual routes through the bordering dimensions. Map any new fractures. Note any unusual concentrations of power. Do not engage sorcerers or mutants unless they cross fully into our domain. Observation only. Bring me the reports at the turning of the hourglasses. Incomplete reports will be… corrected.”

A winged lieutenant near the front bows low, wings scraping stone. “As you command.”

Madelyne’s expression does not soften. “And finally..discipline. The last riot in the lower barracks cost us time and resources we do not have to spare. There will be no more. Rank is to be respected. Orders are to be obeyed. If you have grievances, you bring them through the chain. You do not settle them with claws in the dark. The next unit that turns on itself will be dissolved and fed to the pits. Am I understood?”

The answer rolls across the plain like distant thunder. “Understood, Goblin Queen.”

She surveys them one last time..the endless ranks, the hunger, the barely leashed violence. A thin, cold smile touches her mouth.

“Good. Then return to your posts. Maintain the watch. Maintain the forges. Maintain the order of this realm. Limbo does not sleep. Neither do you.”

She turns away. The armies begin to disperse in disciplined waves of claws, wings, and iron. Behind her, the throne of Limbo waits, and the green fires burn on.

Sweet but Psycho

Madelyne Pryor sat upon her jagged throne of bone and shadow in the heart of Limbo, her crimson hair spilled like fresh blood down her shoulders. The air itself seemed to thicken around her, heavy with the scent of sulfur. Beyond the flickering green witch light that barely held the darkness at bay, the monsters lurked. Hulking, misshapen things with too many eyes, dripping maws, and claws that could shred steel. They shifted restlessly in the gloom, their wet breathing a constant chorus, yet none dared step fully into the circle of light.

They cowered. Every one of them. Beasts that had feasted on the souls of the damned still flinched when her gaze swept over them. They followed her commands without question, crawling on their bellies when she required it, because somehow the Goblin Queen was worse than anything they could ever be. Her power was not merely strength, it was the quiet, absolute certainty that she could unmake them with a thought, and worse, that she might enjoy doing it slowly. Their horror was loud and crude. Hers was elegant, patient, and infinitely more terrifying.

Yet even as the demons groveled and the shadows bent to her will, a different thought slipped through the cracks of her control. Emma Frost. The White Queen’s name alone made something tight and unwilling coil low in Madelyne’s belly. She hated it, hated that the memory of Emma’s cool voice, the press of diamond hard fingers, the way those perfect lips could order her to her knees and make her want to stay there, still lived under her skin.

She had tried making a play for the Hellfire Club, threatened the White Queens lover, and lost. But Emma had merely forgiven her. Madelyne was conflicted.

She was the Goblin Queen, ruler of this hellish realm, feared by monsters that even the most powerful gods might flee. And still, despite herself, Madelyne remained submissive to Emma Frost in ways no throne or army of demons could ever erase.

She stood from her throne and the monsters slinked away as she uttered one word.

Bad Idea Right?

The air above the shattered spires of Hammer Bay tore open. A jagged rift of crimson fire and swirling violet energy spilled forth, the unmistakable signature of Limbo’s sorcery bleeding into the world. The wind howled in protest, carrying the distant metallic tang of blood and ozone. Mutants on the ground looked up in alarm, others simply staring in awe as the demonic portal stabilized.

From the hellish realm stepped Madelyne Pryor.

Her flaming red hair whipped around her like living fire, crowned by a circlet of dark metal and bone. The Red Queen’s costume, black leather and scarlet accents, clung to her like a second skin, the fabric seeming to drink in the last rays of the dying evening sun. In one hand she held a glowing scythe of twisted demonic steel, the other rested possessively on the shoulder of the man who emerged beside her.

Fabian Cortez walked beside her, haunted look in his eyes from his trip through Limbo with her and perhaps something more if the scratch marks on his neck were any indication. He glanced at her with trepidation and no small amount of fear combined with lust, the only sane response to standing at the Red Queen’s side.

The portal snapped shut behind them with a thunderclap that rattled the ground.

Madelyne inhaled deeply, tasting the salt of the sea and the faint metallic residue of old battles that still clung to the island. A slow, predatory smile curved her lips as she surveyed the ruined skyline, twisted steel frameworks, half rebuilt domes, and the distant crash of waves against the battered coast.

“Genosha,” she murmured, voice rich with dark satisfaction.

Fabian stepped forward, scanning the plaza and the wary mutants beginning to gather at a distance. His hands flexed, residual energy dancing across his knuckles. “The locals are already watching. Word will spread quickly. Should we make a more… public declaration?”

Madelyne’s eyes glowed faintly with infernal light as she lowered her scepter, shadows writhing briefly at her feet like living extensions of her will.

“Not yet,” she replied, her tone laced with promise. "Let him come to us.”

She began walking forward across the cracked pavement, Fabian Cortez falling into step at her side, the air around the pair shimmered with barely contained power as Genosha itself seemed to hold its breath.

Giving The Finger

A portal opens up in the X-Mansion halls, Madelyne Pryor, steps through it. She is annoyed and angry. It took hours to break the curse bestowed on her by Famine. But now she was ready to play the cards she'd deal herself.

She stomps down the halls until she makes it to Emma's office, slams the door open, and tosses an oversized finger onto her desk.

My Azazel..who you and the other Queens do so detest, secured this for you the other day at my behest. Pass it along to Sage, Forge, and McCoy for study, and find a way to hurt him. A way that sticks.

Maddy's Club Nightmares

The doors of the Hellfire Club swung open with a theatrical groan, as if even the building was letting out an annoyed sigh at it's new visitor.

Madelyne Pryor strode through the entrance like she owned the place and was already considering burning it down for the insurance money. Now dressed much more like herself, after being called out she saw little sense in continuing to play the part of Jean Grey.

Her crimson hair spilled over a black leather costume that looked like it had been tailored by someone with a grudge against subtlety. The faint scent of ozone and scorched silk followed her, leftover from whatever dimensional rift she’d torn open to get here.

The main seating area stretched before her in all its self important glory. Dark wood paneling, velvet drapes the color of old blood, crystal chandeliers dripping with enough fake antiquity to make her snort in derision.

Madelyne stopped in the center of the room, hands on her hips, and let out a laugh that was equal parts amusement and contempt.

Oh, please,” she said loudly enough for half the room to hear. “This is what passes for elite vthese days? I’ve seen better décor in European tourist traps.”

A few elegantly dressed patrons turned, eyebrows raised. One man in a tailored suit actually clutched his martini glass tighter.

She gestured at a massive gilded mirror framed in baroque excess. “Look at this. Just look at it. You people spent how much money trying to look like you have taste, and it still screams ‘midlife crisis'? It’s giving haunted Victorian brothel that lost a fight with a Temu catalogue."

Madelyne’s boot heels clicked sharply as she continued her slow circle of the room, voice dripping acid. “And the Hell motif...while a classic...really is overdone here."

She paused by a plush crimson chaise that probably cost more than most people’s homes. “This place reeks of trying too hard. All this faux decadence and faux aristocracy. You’re not the Hellfire Club. You’re the Hellfire Country Club. Where the villains go to network, sip overpriced scotch, and pretend they’re not one bad stock tip away from irrelevance.”

A familiar, icy voice cut through the murmurs.

“Madelyne.” Emma Frost stepped into view from the grand staircase, all white corsetry and arctic poise, blonde hair gleaming like a blade. “To what do we owe this… uninvited tantrum?”

Madelyne turned, a sharp smile curling her lips. Her eyes glowed faintly with telepathic fire.

“I came to see if the rumors were true, that the White Queen had turned the old boys’ club into a theme park for people who think ‘class’ is something you buy by the yard. And darling?” She swept her arm out, taking in the entire ostentatious room. “It’s worse than I imagined. This isn’t a seat of power. This is a museum piece."

She took a step closer, voice lowering to something dangerously sweet. “If you’re going to play at being queens, at least have the dignity to make it interesting. Right now it just looks like rich people cosplaying as masterminds.”

Emma’s smile was razor thin. “Careful, Goblin Queen. You’re dripping disdain all over my very expensive rugs.”

Madelyne laughed again, low and vicious.

“Someone has to. They’re hideous.”

The Woman in the Mirror

The woman looked in the mirror as she stood in her chambers, studying herself. For a brief moment the reflection seemed to flicker in her mind, changing to show who she really was.

Madelyne Pryor grinned wickedly. It had been so easy to fool them all. She hated playing the part of Jean Grey, so self righteous and pitiable. But for now it suited her needs.

The worst part was having to deal with Emma Frost and her incessant attempts at dominance. How she so wished she could simply crush the White Queen beneath her heel and teach her a lesson in humility..and real dominance.

But for now she was still Jean Grey...

Maddy studied herself in the mirror adopting the mannerisms and facial ticks of her 'twin'.

When she was ready, she left her room returning to halls of Xavier's Mansion, once again Jean Grey and nothing more.

Phoenix Reborn

Ressurection. A concept the X-Men are accustomed to but none more so than I.

But resurrection is no gentle mercy, it is a violent rebirth, a tearing away of the old self so that the universe might pour new light into you. Each time the Phoenix lifts me from the ashes, I carry the echoes of what I lost, the quiet grief of lives unlived, the love that waited for me, and the terrible knowledge that every return demands a price.

Yet I would choose it again, and again, because in that moment of awakening, I remember why we fight, not just to survive, but to burn brighter than the darkness that tried to claim us.

I am Jean Grey..and I am returned to you.
