Part 2 of my attempt to create a heraldic menagerie

Part 1 here: https://www.reddit.com/r/heraldry/s/pLOjk5heKJ

Here is part 2 of my heraldic menagerie, an attempt by me to create a visual guide of all (or most…ok, maybe just some) of the different beasts and monsters of heraldry.

This group is definitely weirder than the last, with a fair number of strange, unusual or uncommon heraldic creatures that don’t make many appearances. More than one of them I had never heard of before starting this project. Some of them also deviate a little from their traditional depictions.

I was curious what a salamander rampant rather than passant might look like, and I just couldn’t bring
myself to go “full chicken” on my cockatrice.

Let me know what you think, I’m eager for any feedback on suggestions anyone has on how to improve my art.

Also, I am planning a part three and I’ve only got a handful of creatures in mind so if you have any suggestions on what needs to be added to my heraldic zoo let me know!

The second image is just a simpler version of the first image, because I’m still not sure how I feel about all the little scrollwork flourishes.

Let me know what you think!

What do you think, Chimeric heraldic monster? Or extinct megafauna hellbeast?

The answer is megafauna hell-beast.

Despite the fact that this creature screams heraldic chimaera, this is in fact a real creature that terrorized the planet tens of thousands of years ago. It’s called an Entelodont, also known as the “pig from hell” or the “terminator pig”.

The easiest way to describe them is a sabertoothed boar that could grow to the size of a buffalo. Fossils have shown that they were capable of biting through the skull of an American rhino.

I’ve had a fascination with prehistoric murder-monsters lately, and as soon as I discovered this terrifying creature I knew it was the perfect candidate to be turned into a heraldic charge.

Frankly, there are so many ice age beasts that are just begging to become members of the heraldic bestiary. I’ve previously drawn and posted a smilodon on here, and I plan to draw a few more of these magnificent creatures.

My attempt at a heraldic “menagerie”

I’ve always liked the various presentations of different heraldic creatures floating around the internet, so I thought I’d start making one of my own.

I decided to focus on the all the fun, whacky, chimeric and mythical creatures of medieval heraldry here. I’ve included some well known heraldic beasts, as well as few lesser known creatures from the depths of the heraldic bestiary.

Let me know what you think.

Feedback, criticism and critique is always appreciated. I want to improve my art, and I’m always eager for any advice on how to do so.

Thank you, and I hope you enjoy.

The second image is just a less fancy version of the first. I wasn’t sure if the parchment style background and the little scrollwork flourishes were charming, or stupid.

Are there any glaring omissions here? I plan to do a second, and possibly even a third, page, so please give a shoutout for your favorite heraldic beasts.

As always, feedback, criticism and critique is always appreciated. I want to improve my art, and I’m always eager for any advice on how to do so.

In particular, I’m a little worried my style might be moving away from the strictly heraldic. Am I imagining things? If I’m not, how do I reel it back in?

Thank you, and I hope you enjoy.

Best documentaries/videos on Smilodon and other predators

Hello,

My kid (and I’ll admit, myself) has recently become obsessed with ice age megafauna, and in particular sabertooth cats and other carnivorous mammals.

I’m hoping someone can point me towards some good documentaries or other video series about some of these creatures. We’ve watched our way through “Prehistoric Predators” (which I gather has some issues).

Any recommendations or help would be appreciated.

I apologize if this is the wrong place to be asking this question.

Thank you in advance.

The arms of a fictional North Sea Empire

A couple of days ago someone on here posted a thought experiment asking about the hypothetical coat of arms for a North Sea Empire composed of the combined realms of the three claimants of 1066.

I thought it was a fun idea, and I had a few minutes to kill so I cooked up my own concept.

I promise, I tried to limit the red. I really did, but there was only so much I could do.

I went with the attributed arms of Harald Hardrada in the 1st and 4th quarters, with the attributed arms of Harold Godwinson in the 2nd, and William of Normandy in the 3rd.

The shield in the middle shows the arms attributed to Canute the Great at Winchester Castle, with the Lion of Norway and the White dragon of Wessex/England (the only place I could feasibly find an alternative for a red field).

I threw in the Danish cross (technically anachronistic, but so is the whole concept) for Denmark, and to break up the red field a bit.

It was a fun way to kill some time.

Let me know what you guys think! Or how you think these hypothetical arms should look.

Except for the crosses, all the charges used here are my own art.

No story here, just a weird creative bug that bit me and I I had to indulge.

There are tons of cool Neolithic creatures that would make superb heraldic charges, although I’ll admit that I have a particular weakness for Smilodons.

Hopefully you guys will forgive some casual heraldic blasphemy. Perhaps if this proves popular I’ll “update” (or devolve?) some other national arms with a Neolithic flair.

Let me know what you think!
