Forked now lets your household share one meal plan and shopping list from Mealie
I'm the developer of Forked, the iOS app for deciding what to cook from your Mealie library. It's been a while since I posted here, and the latest update is the biggest one yet, so here's what changed, including the first paid feature, since I said I'd be upfront if that ever happened.
Households: cook from one plan together
The most-requested thing was "my partner and I both want the same plan and grocery list." Now you can create a Household and invite up to four people. Everyone edits the normal Plan and Shopping tabs, and changes sync between phones through iCloud.
- There's no Forked server. The Household lives in the organizer's own iCloud.
- Each person connects to Mealie with their own credentials. Forked never shares your server address or API token with the Household.
- Dietary preferences, Plan History, and your recipe cache stay on your own device.
- Only the organizer needs Pro. Joining is free.
Forked Pro: $9.99 once, no subscription
Pro is a one-time purchase with Family Sharing. It adds:
- Creating a Household
- Plan History and "Use This Plan Again"
- Reuse Ingredients, which favors meals that share ingredients so less goes to waste
- Avoid Recent Meals
Last time I said that if paid features ever showed up, they'd be new features, not things that were already free. That's what this is: everything that shipped free is still free, and nothing got moved behind Pro.
(If you updated last week and saw Pro as "unavailable," that was my mistake in the App Store submission. It's fixed now.)
Also new, for everyone:
- Nutrition at a glance: calories per serving plus a protein/fat/carb bar
- Quantities show as fractions (½ tsp, not 0.5 tsp) in recipes and Shopping
- Swipe between steps while cooking, and step timers start at the time the step calls for
- Shopping tells you when an item was merged, and combines duplicates like "garlic" and "fresh garlic"
- Setup accepts a pasted server URL and shows sync progress
- Saved recipes keep working when your server is slow or offline
- Emoji avatars for Chef Profiles
- Better layouts at the largest text sizes
Still true:
- iOS only
- Mealie only
- No ads, and no analytics tracking what you cook
- Shopping is still a local Forked list, not synced back to Mealie
- Needs API access to Mealie with a bearer token, so a browser login wall in front of the API (Authentik, Cloudflare Access) won't work
I'd especially like feedback from anyone who tries Households. That's the newest and least battle-tested part, and I'd rather hear about rough edges here than guess.
