Returning to the game?

I completed the game + dlc several years ago and by now I’ve forgotten quite a bit of it, so I’m thinking about starting a “new run”. I know it won’t be the same as the first time, but I thought I’d see if others here have tried this and could share their experience doing the same.

What is this thing at the end of my bread knife for?

The two points are extremely sharp. It frequently gouges my cutting board when I’m slicing bread.

No FP? No problem.

From my first time beating Demon Prince. While I’m always glad I have my trusty dagger, it felt like I was hitting this guy with a plastic fork. These DLC bosses have been tough as a pure caster…

Pretty fall

Just found this to be a pretty sight, as I fell into the Demon Prince lair after having cast crystal homing soul mass before the plunge. (Cast, rest, then plunge to replenish FP—the life of a caster.)

I finally beat her <exhale>. And Gael somehow survived!

This was one of the hardest boss fights I’ve faced across the whole series. Maybe the hardest. I did a lot of tweaking to my spells, rings, gear, and strategy before I found the working formula for me. I had to drop my <30% weight standard and suit up a bit. What really helped was equipping grass crest so I could replace chloranthy ring with steel protection. Also added ember to my inventory use slot thing which I popped when I got her part way through stage 3 and things were looking good for a bit more survivability.

I tried A LOT of different spells. Ultimately what worked really well in phase 1 was keeping constant pressure on her with homing soulmass. Constant. As soon as the spell fired I’d cast another, and if there was some distance when it fired I’d send a GHSA her way for bonus damage. I pretty much just homing soulmassed her the entire phase.

I tried the throwing knife trick so I could track her when she went invisible but my irl vision isn’t very good so I just couldn’t distinguish the little knives from the background quickly enough for it to matter.

I was never able to backstab her after her leaping attack move because there was always a little frost or flame behind her that would interrupt my attack. I’ve read there are two types of these attacks and one has aoe behind her and the other doesn’t but I never saw the latter.

Even though I’m decent at parrying I gave up on that approach eventually. As a glass cannon the risk/reward just didn’t work, and I kept taking partial damage on parries anyway.

I was able to get a few backstabs in during her phase 1 invisibility thing, which is very satisfying with my crystal dagger +10.

Speaking of crits, what was even more satisfying was staggering the big guy in phase 2 and then stabbing him in the face for like 4k damage with the crit.

Gael must be happy, still being alive at the end, that was a nice surprise for both of us.

My Motivation is flagging

Mage here. I’ve been working my way through the entire FS DS series one by one, one after another, all for the first time. I’ve had my share of struggles, which I eventually overcame; and I’ve had harder ones. I was able to defeat Fume Knight. I beat Malenia way back when. However here I am trying with Friede like I have with bosses before but finding myself just not caring to pick up the controller and try. This is not a complaint. I know I can beat her, but I’m just bored, and I don’t feel any drive anymore to spend the time learning her phase 3 moves well enough to do it. I don’t like this feeling. I don’t want to go to the ringed city without defeating her. And I don’t want to run off and get into another game without finishing DS3. I was absolutely loving every moment of this game. Im not sure what I’m even asking or looking for. Consolation? Anyway, if you can relate, I’d appreciate hearing how you pushed through. And please don’t take this as a “help me Friede/Malenia/Fume/Covetous Demon is so unfair” post, and ty!

Working my way thru the DLC for the first time. I’m at the Friede fight rn. Haven’t managed to find a way onto that promontory(?) yet. There was that big wolf up there earlier. It looks like it could be walkable, and this break in the tower is suspiciously perfectly positioned to focus my attention on it, suggesting it might be there for more than just looks. Sry about the quality, was lazy and took a photo of my tv.

He wasn’t kidding when he asked if I’ve seen the rot that afflicts this world.

My first playthrough. Only got hit once, but then again, as a sorcerer I can’t really get hit more than once by this guy. Was pretty happy with this fight. Took me a number of tries and some ring and spell tweaks to get it right. Overall I enjoyed this boss. Felt like Fume-lite.

Earlier in the fight I’d accidentally chugged a bunch of blue flasks instead of orange flasks so I was totally out of MP. I had to take out my switchblade. I almost didn’t just because it felt unbefitting. Soul of Cinder must be mortified.

If you’re wondering how I’m taking that damage as a sorcerer I’m wearing rings of steel protection and flame resistance and had popped a fire resistance item at the start of phase 2. It was a sloppy fight on my part the whole way through.
