Exam Location - can appeal?

Hi All,

For the upcoming September examination, I submitted online as first choice and a location as second choice behind first choice. I have been allocated the second choice (I regret I didn’t omit it entirely) and it is two hours away from me.

Is there anyway of appealing to the IFoA to change my exam location to online?

Thanks

CP1 Help and Advice:

Hi everyone!

I have a couple of questions and would really appreciate any advice from those who've sat or passed CP1.

1. This is my current study plan. Does it sound reasonable, or is there anything you'd do differently?

Now until 6 July

  • Finish reading through the CMP.
  • Rather than attempting all the CMP questions, I'll review the model answers and build a master sheet of recurring themes (e.g. for Life: mortality, morbidity, medical inflation; for Finance: investment return, investment timing, matching, liquidity/solvency, etc.).
  • Create a separate document with all the acronyms.

1a. There are so many acronyms! Did you memorise all of them, or just the more useful ones? If you were selective, how did you decide which ones were worth learning?

6 July – 20 July

  • Complete X2–X6.
  • Tidy up and reorganise my notes.

21 July – 24 August

  • Complete 12 Paper 1 and 12 Paper 2 past papers.
  • Mark them and keep notes on what I could improve.

1b. Any tips for making the most of past papers? How did you manage to come up with so many points in your answers? Did you mainly rely on a master sheet of recurring themes, or was there another approach that worked well for you?

24 August – 13 September

  • Revisit the questions I struggled with.
  • Focus on memorising the acronyms and my consolidated notes.

2. I'm also a bit unsure about the order of revision.

If I start with past papers, I'll probably have to do them open-book because I won't have memorised the acronyms and notes yet. But if I memorise everything first, I'll have to keep it fresh for over a month before the exam, which seems quite difficult.

How did you approach this, and what would you recommend?

Thanks so much in advance—I really appreciate any advice!

Hi all — would really appreciate some advice on a rental issue in England.

One of my window locks/handles has failed, and the key has snapped cleanly in half inside the mechanism. From my perspective, I was using the window completely normally at the time — unlocking it, then opening it for ventilation. There was no forcing, no unusual angle, nothing that felt wrong — it just suddenly failed and the key snapped.

After reporting it, I’ve now had this response from the letting agent (after they spoke with the landlord):

They believe the issue is due to tenant misuse, outside of fair wear and tear.
They say the key appears to have been turned while the window was in the upright/open position, which would have damaged it.
They’ve also said the windows are new and “should not have broken so easily.”
Based on that, they’re saying I’m responsible for the repair costs.

I initially tried to take advice to fix it myself, but I think I’ve made things worse. The broken part of the key is stuck inside the lock, and it’s clearly not just a simple handle replacement anymore — it likely needs extraction or a more involved repair. So DIY is basically off the table now.

So now I’m stuck deciding:

  • Do I just accept it and pay for the repair (especially now it might cost more)?
  • Or is this worth disputing — i.e. argue that a snapped key doesn’t automatically prove misuse and could fall under faulty hardware or wear and tear?

TL;DR: Window lock failed while being used normally, key snapped inside. Agent says it’s misuse (turned while open) and I have to pay. Tried to fix it myself and made it worse, so that’s no longer an option. Should I push back or just accept it?

Any advice — especially from people familiar with UK tenancy disputes — would be really appreciated.

Thanks!

Hi all, looking for some advice on a rental issue in the UK. England.

The key/handle mechanism on one of my windows has broken — the key has actually snapped in two. I’ve attached a photo of the window handle and the broken piece. The letting agent is saying this is due to tenant misuse, claiming the key must have been turned while the window was in the open/upright position, and that I’m responsible for the repair costs.

From my perspective, I was just using the window normally and it suddenly failed. The windows are apparently quite new, and there’s nothing in my tenancy agreement that specifically mentions responsibility for this kind of issue.

I’m trying to figure out:

Does this sound like tenant misuse, or could it reasonably be considered wear and tear / a faulty mechanism?

Is it something I could fix myself (e.g. replacing the handle/lock), or is this more of a specialist job?

If I did arrange the repair myself, is it likely to be significantly cheaper than going through the landlord/agent?

Any advice or similar experiences would be really appreciated — especially from anyone familiar with UK tenancy rules.

Thanks!

Hi, I’m a bit concerned about a head injury and would really appreciate some advice. Two nights ago I was out drinking with colleagues, and the last thing I remember is saying goodbye to them and getting on a bus. I then woke up at home with blood coming from a cut on the upper back of my head, which seems to be about 3 cm wide, and there was quite a lot of blood on my pillow and even dripping onto my shoes, looked like a crime scene. The next day I didn’t go to the hospital because I was very hungover, so I mostly slept and vomited once or twice. Yesterday I did go to the hospital, where a doctor cleaned off the dried blood and applied something to the wound (I’m not sure exactly what), and told me it seemed okay but that I should avoid screens and high stress. The bleeding kind of stopped around one day after the injury, but up to yesterday when I lay down on a pillow stomach up, in around 30 minutes there were still blood splotches produced. Today when I woke up I still made new blood stains on the pillow (I roll around sometimes in my sleep).

These few days, I’m feeling a bit off — I have noticeable brain fog and feel like my thinking is slower than usual, along with some mild neck stiffness (though I can still move my neck fully) and general fatigue and lethargy despite getting around eight hours of sleep. Other than that, I don’t have vision problems, weakness, or issues with coordination or sensation, and I can move around normally and even run, but mentally I feel groggy and not quite right. For example, when I'm typing I realise I make multiple spelling errors which I would not have made with such frequency before. I’m worried because I don’t know how I got the injury in the first place, and I’m concerned there could be something more serious going on or potential long-term effects if this has been underestimated?

Thanks in advance for any medical or doctor guidance.
