Fishing with nerds - results (skunked)

So on the weekend, I took an alum and two UW students fishing. The plan was to go to timmins for walleye opener day, but a buddy texted me a pic of ice still on the lake. So we headed for Eastern Ontario near the Quebec border to spend the weekend fishing on the St. Lawrence river. Good fishing there.

Except, see pic, the boat died. On our first trip out we had to get towed back to the dock. Had it in to a mechanic a couple of times and no luck - no boat for the weekend.

So instead we went on a 'tour'. Basically just driving around checking stuff out. We ended up:

  • Driving around staring at the locals
  • spending some time at a huge flea market
  • visiting the farm where the McIntosh apple was discovered
  • shot some guns at the farm
  • visiting a co-op dairy near the Quebec border and having some authentic poutine
  • having my family over for a camp dinner of venison sausage
  • and just general driving around

So no fish (I think this is the first time I've ever been skunked in almost 10 years), but still a break from school/work for a few days.

I've promised everyone that once the boat is fixed I'll take them on a day trip and actually get some fish.

Harvesting with nerds - results

Took three students and one townie harvesting ramps this morning. Ramps are the first plant that can be foraged in the spring. sort of a cross between onions and garlic.

Beautiful day for a hike in the bush, had a good time, and I entertained everyone with a 20 minute rant on AI to wrap it all up.

Fishing with Nerds - foraging, short notice, tomorrow morning.

That's a wrap, we are full!

'sup nerds?

I'm going foraging for ramps early tomorrow morning with my son's gf and a rando waterloo person. I have room for two UW students, first two that say I'm in, come with.

Deets:

  • I'll pick you up tomorrow in waterloo at 7am. Return before noon.
  • I'm a dad-level old UW alumni
  • We are going to a private chunk of bush on a farm where we have permission. Wear appropriate shoes.
  • Ramps are the first harvestable food that comes up in the spring. They're sort of a cross between garlic and onion I guess? Anyway, they're tasty.
  • Last year my son and I also stumbled across some morel mushrooms, so maybe we get lucky this year as well. Morel mushrooms are very sought after.
  • Trip is unofficial and unaffiliated, just me going for a walk in the bush and bringing some folks along.
