I built Headroom, a Plex music player for iOS and Android and I'm looking for testers

Hey, I'm a longtime software developer and I’ve been building Headroom because I wanted one serious music player to replace Spotify.

For Plex, it supports Sign in with Plex, direct or transcoded playback, offline downloads, playlists, synced lyrics, Smart Radio, Custom Mixes, gapless playback and crossfade, ReplayGain, a 32-band parametric EQ and AutoEQ headphone profiles.

It’s available on both iOS and Android, with CarPlay and AirPlay on iOS and Android Auto and Chromecast on Android.

The beta is already being used regularly, but I need more Plex-specific setups that I can’t reproduce myself. I’m especially interested in:

  • Large music libraries
  • Remote Plex servers
  • A lot of playlists
  • CarPlay, Android Auto, AirPlay or Chromecast
  • Offline listening

Both betas are available here: https://headroommusic.app/beta/

iOS uses TestFlight. Android is available now as a signed APK from the website.

Headroom - Self-Hosted Music Media player

Hey, I’ve been building Headroom, a dedicated music player for people who keep their libraries on Jellyfin, Plex, Emby or Navidrome/OpenSubsonic.

I started it because I wanted my self-hosted library to feel like an actual music app instead of just browsing music through a general media client. It has offline downloads, gapless playback and crossfade, synced lyrics, Smart Mixes, ReplayGain, EQ/AutoEQ, background playback and CarPlay. You can also connect multiple servers without needing a different player for each one.

Normal listening is working pretty well now, so I’m looking for people to use it with real libraries and find the problems I can’t reproduce myself. I’m especially interested in large libraries, remote servers, offline playback, Bluetooth and CarPlay.

If something breaks or feels confusing, let me know your device and which server you were using. There are demo libraries in the app if you want to try it without setting up a server first.

Thank you!

I built Headroom, a Jellyfin music player for iOS and Android and I'm looking for beta testers!

Hey everyone. I'm a longtime software developer by profession, and I built Headroom after deciding I wanted to leave Spotify without giving up the polish and audio features of a premium music player. Between its promotion of AI-generated artists and the ICE recruitment ads, I finally reached my limit.

Headroom connects directly to your Jellyfin server and includes gapless playback, adjustable crossfade, a 32-band parametric EQ, AutoEQ Headphone Profiles, ReplayGain, offline downloads, download management, album/artist radio, smart mixes, audiobooks/podcast support through audiobookshelf, and CarPlay/Android Auto support.

It also supports Plex, Emby, and Navidrome/OpenSubsonic music servers.

The iOS beta is available now through TestFlight. I’m still waiting for Google to approve the Android testing release, so Android access is coming soon. I’ll update the beta page as soon as it’s available.

I’m especially looking for people willing to test real-world setups: large libraries, reverse proxies, remote playback, background playback, downloads, Bluetooth, and in-car use. Everything is free and unlocked during the beta, there are no purchases or subscriptions.

Join the iOS beta or check Android availability here:

I welcome all feedback! I'm continuously iterating on this and I want this to be an app that both you all and I love.
