Disabled guitar players- advice please.
Hi, I am investigating how accessible learning to play a guitar could be for me. I have a stupid amount of fatigue related health conditions and wide spread pain. My hands are particularly painful at times. Learning to play guitar has been a life long dream of mine and as I grow older I’m more worried that it just won’t be possible.
I’m wondering if anyone who is disabled/ requires accessibility adaptations to play can give me any advice. Is this just a very foolish dream that I’ll never truly get to even try or are there adaptations or even types of guitar I should seriously investigate.
I’m not looking to buy gadgets and quick fixes/ cheats or to buy a guitar for it to gather dust and I’m also not looking to be able to play for anyone’s entertainment but my own.
I’m very focused on providing myself with opportunities to have moments of joy and improve my quality of life by learning, creating and taking my time to work on projects I genuinely adore.
So this isn’t a ‘how fast’ can I do it or ‘cheats’ way- more of a ‘hey, does anyone else who lives with pain and fatigue play and can you offer me advice’. I’m not stuck on any type of guitar either but I have wondered if a tenor guitar would be good because less strings and small neck (I think?). I know it’s kind of considered not quite a guitar or a uke so it might be good to try?
My music knowledge is 4/5 years of trumpet playing when I was a kid and tween, I could read music pretty well but I’m very rusty now. Only ever played a few power cords on a friend’s guitar or ukulele. Willing to put in the effort and time but genuinely wanting to know if it’s possible.
Many thanks for reading this essay and appreciate any and all feedback. ❤️
