Will I ever be able to play?

Just got a new guitar today and really started getting into lessons recently (beyond strumming and riffs per usual).

One thing I’ve noticed is that with club fingers (as a result of lots of nail biting as a kid) makes it EXTREMELY difficult to cleanly play and to move my fingers across the strings. It also starts to hurt my fingers and leave dents in them very quickly

Am I just being a crybaby or is guitar even an achievable ability given my condition? Should I just sell this stuff before I continue?

Does anybody know how to tune a guitar string?

So Im developing a theory, im calling earth time field and I'm working on a section that has to do with harmonics so basically what I came up with was ancient civilizations were tracking harmonics they would line up a string with a star document it , or have someone measure to the point where it's even with the eye. And if you do the math for tuning a guitar string it's spot on zero0 /24 node , 6,12,18,and 24 and anti nodes are 9,15and 21 full wave start at zero peak at 9 half wave at 12 peak at 15 complete the full wave at 18.18 is the bridge to the start of the. Half wave so it goes 18 start 21 peak and 24 completes half wave.??

Advice on improvising

I've seen somewhere that knowing the scales, especially minor pentatonic scale will help you in improvising, I know the scale by heart and can play it on any root note, but I still don't know how to improvise my own melody, there are songs like Jane! by the long faces where one of the tunes was basically from the c# minor pentatonic, and that helped me learn the tune since I know the scale, but improvising my own like on the spot or getting a groove that makes sense or improvising over a song I have no clue how to do, I just try stuff and it doesn't sound right, please any advice is welcome, please be nice 🙏

Amp help

Hii i already bought an electric guitar but i cant decide on which amp to get, the shop i bought the guitar at was recommending cort, it was about 97 in usd, but my budget was kinda tight, so i didnt buy it.

thoughts on mini amps? I see a lot of hate for them saying they sound trash or like toys but my budget is kinda there

My choices are a used orange crush 12 or a used marshall mg10 unless someone else buys it first

or a brand new orange crush mini

or a brand new boss katana mini which im kinda unsure about because its still expensive

for amp sims like audio interface, its also expensive and a bit of a hassle because i have to use it with a laptop so idk

Semi-hollow suggestions

Hi,

I have been playing guitar for just about a year and half now but played bass for about 3 years. Thinking about ditching bass since I enjoy guitar muxh more and would rather dedicate more time to guitar. Enough rambling...

I am browsing semi-hollow/ Hollow body guitars at the moment around the £500 mark and I am stuck with which to choose. I research into loads of them but am yet to test any out.

I have looked into Gretsch streamliner g2622t, Epiphone es-339, ibanez artcores, Sire H7 to name a few. I mostly play rock such as classic, alt, brit rock etc.

Can anyone suggest me which would be an all round guitar for my style if you relate and if i should look into any different ones. Upgrading from a modded squier tele

How to get started with guitar

This is my first post ever so Im kinda nervous lol

Soo basically Ive been getting into writing my own songs lately and I just use the piano I have at home atm, but my friend taught me some basic guitar on hers and I kinda wanna start playing myself now.

Just upfront, I used to play violin and I still play the flute so Ive got a pretty good understanding of music theory, I actually enjoyed the familarity of playing a string (idk if a guitar would be considered that but whatever) instrument again as It has been a while since I last played the violin.

To get to the point, I really dont know how to get started? Ive been thinking about getting an electric guitar second hand but I really dont know what to look out for or If I should start on acoustic? I really wanna be able to have a versatile sound tho and I also mainly listen to alternative music so I feel like Id rather have an electric guitar.

I think Id be able to teach myself what I need to know with all the tutorials online and whatnot but Im really unsure If I should actually commit fully.

So what exactly do I need to get started or need to know? And what kinds of electric guitar are suitable for someone like me? Id appreciate any help really :)

1st fret playing issue

Idk what's happening when picking it gently it rings out but a little hard it does not I'm only 5.5 months in help me what to do can play A and A minor shape easily but this is very annoying now

Super beginner solo question

As a super beginner, about 4-months, if there are solos that I like with lots of bends, vibrato and other advanced techniques. Is it OK to play them without all of those things at first and add them in as I get better, or will it lock in bad habits that I will need to unlearn?

Thoughts?

Resistance to chord voicings

I have been at this for 7 months but not consistently. I have no music experience whatsoever, none. I joined Tony's acoustic challenge at the start and he's got a 30 day thing you do first to give you the basics then bam, you move into the regular stuff and theres such a difference in the basics and what follows is too overwhelming so I quit. Now I have the books from the guitar institute, I like these little books but at the end of the 1st book he starts in with chord voicings, which if you never heard that term, it's all the different ways to play the chords up and down the neck. I have become very resistant to these, when you finally learn some basic chords, G,C, D Em and such and learn how to transition from one to the other, then they throw all these different ways to play them and more, it's just a bit much when starting out. I'm going to stick with it a little while but there never seems to be a beginner progression that doesn't have a BAM now do this! I'm retired, so no spring chicken, but man, there's gotta be a better way to teach us raw beginners. Any suggestions?

Need help with thumb position

Hello all,

I’m a beginner and i have been following justin guitar’s beginner course for two months now and i’m basically obsessed with learning guitar. I’m also a bit paranoid about bad habits, so here’s my question. When i play chords like G my thumb always arches a bit away from me instead of being straight behind the fretboard. Is this something i need to work on? When i try to play with my thumb straight and slightly lower it feels unnatural and feels as if my hand is restricted from relaxed movement.

I also find it unnatural to play with a pick in my hand and can’t relax my strimming hand with a pick. Without a pick it’s fine and i can keep the rythm and strumming patern better. Any tips would help. I try to practice at least an hour a day altough since summer break, it’s been more like 3/4 hours a day. During practice i do finger stretches, chord changes, practice 4 songs (Hotel California, Wish you where here, Last of us theme song and knockin on heavens door). I also do the a minor and e minor pentatonic scale and i just started with music theory.

Any advice is appreciated, also sorry for my english, it is not my first language.

Hope you have a good day!

Loop pedal bad idea ?

As a beginner who still fumbles chords , struggles with chord changes, and can’t keep a rhythm for more then 10 seconds , is a loop pedal going to stunt my growth?

I feel like it could be a lot of fun to play a couple chords I know , create a basic rhythym and play pentatonics over it or something. (Or learn the lead part of the song)

Edit: I just want to make learning more fun and engaging. I’m not looking for a quick fix or a shortcut.

Finally saved up enough for my first guitar

After pinching dollars here and there I was able to gather enough funds to get my first guitar and I’m so excited I’ve been playing nonstop since I got it, my fingers are killing me! But a question I have for the people of Reddit is that I am really into metal, and a lot of songs I want to learn are in drop b and c, and I also have an interest in non metal songs, a bunch in standard tuning (and some other odd standard ish tunings) but I don’t have enough money to set up multiple guitars, would I be better off saving up for a drop pedal or am I just cooked? When I tune this down real low it doesn’t sound very good the strings rattle and I’ve heard it’s not actually good for it. Thank you for taking the time to read my post. Any advice helps

People who know electric guitars like the back of their hands.

Hii guys! I'm still dreaming about having and being able to play electric guitars and guitars in general. Ik cliché but I love them a lot.

23 y/o female this side, been dreaming about it since I was 15. But my household is too strict for such activities, in school I used to be in school choir that too my parents had no idea about what I do in school. That's the most I've been related to music in real life, classes and owning a real instrument is like a pipe dream.

Now I really want to start my journey, better late than never. Please share tips on where to start, student here so cannot splurge a lot on expensive kits. But committed enough to save up for several months to get my first one.

I've already been looking for preloved guitars and this Beauty had my heart in the first look.

Is this normal? My guitar sounds lil bit different today, Could this be a reason?

Today when i tried to play guitar for practice I felt something is wrong. Something is not sounding right.I tunned it with tuner though. Could this be because i am using capo too much? Did i broke my guitar somehow? 😔

Confused about the guitar strings and chords

I don’t know much about music or instruments at all so this might be a dumb question. I recently started learning to play the guitar and I’m using Justin guitar app as a lot of people recommended it to me. I know the guitar has E, A, D, G, B, Low E strings. I’ve picked up playing A and D chords and switching up between them only, what I don’t get is why do I need to hold G2, E2 and B3 to get D when there already is a D string? Similarly to get A I need to hold down D2, G2 and B2 to get A when there is a A string? Am I missing something is there a reason we combine these and can’t just play it on the string?

Idk what songs to learn

I bought my electric guitar a couple months ago, and I've been really irregular when learning it. I'm rlly bad at having hobbies because I can't for the life of me be consistent in something even if its something I like. I learnt bits and pieces, I started off learning the different chords (completely forgot what it is now but I was doing the beginner course on justinguitar) but I realised that it put me off learning even more so i started learning snippits of songs e.g. Meddle about by chase atlantic, Until I found you by Stephen Sanchez and a couple others that I've forgotten about.

I want to start learning again but I prefer tabs and riffs?? instead of whole songs so I wanna learn some songs that are in between beginner and intermediate because so many beginner songs are chord changes. does anyone have any recs?

I really liked 'The Edge' - The American Dawn, but I couldn't find the tabs and that was what I was planning on learning fully first, so now I gotta find another song to learn that's mid ish difficulty. Does anyone have any recs or advice?
