Best way to get going?

So, I hope this gets some responses. I know it’s a basic question and been asked a million times, but here goes.

What is the very best way to learn some guitar “stuff”?

I am not looking to do anything beyond being able to mess around a bit, play some tunes, and ultimately learn enough about the fretboard to be able to do some soloing, noodling, playing along to tunes.

I know, it’s a basic question and might seem stupid, but there are so many different online instructors, videos, etc that I don’t know where to begin.

I’m 63, took lessons when I was like 10-12. I have an electric guitar that I bought and it just sits near my stereo looking pretty. So, I can play basic chords, but every time I pick it up, I get discouraged. I don’t want to pay a ton for lessons, but I do feel like I need to make a commitment to “something” that keeps my attention and allows me to have some fun. I’m a Deadhead, I love guitar players and have seen a ton of greats over the years. Maybe that’s why I get discouraged, I don’t know. I’m the type of persons who has a lot of hobbies and interests, so I am looking to fit playing guitar in, not having it take over my life.

Well, if you read all that, thanks! Any suggestions?

Question on pentatonic

Hi all, say, Am pentatonic is for key Am or C only, if I want to play a song in Bm then I should learn Bm pentatonic? Likewise, I need to be in F pentatonic for songs in F key? Thanks.

Teaching Online

Hello everyone! For many years I was traveling to houses giving in person lessons. Last year I decided to give it up. I felt that the traveling just wasn't becoming worth it anymore. So now I have just been teaching lessons online, but have found it harder to find new students. I just thought I would throw this out there for anyone interested. If you'd like to discuss your guitar goals with me over Zoom to see if I could be of help, there would be no charge. If you decided to do lessons, I charge on a week by week basis, so you could stop lessons at any time. I'm looking for beginner to intermediate level students. I specialize in music notation, rock, blues, and fingerstyle guitar. Please no negative comments just send a private message if interested. Thank you.

Any tips for having fun on guitar ?

Hi ! I’ve been playing the guitar for a few years now (5 years) but very irregularly for about 3 years because every time I play, I have fun for 20 minutes and then I come back to technical shortcomings, musical theories or practices that make me feel like I’m going around in circles.

I don’t know how to explain it better, like I’m going to learn the chords of a song, I’ll catch on, but I’ll soon get bored. While to take the example of my former guitar teacher, when he played even a two-chord loop, it had a soul, it was pleasant to listen to! When I play, I feel like nothing is really injected into the guitar and that’s why I’m bored.

Of course, I tried to watch videos to find out how to make up for it, but I feel like all the videos that deal with this topic are too vague or aimed at real beginners.

So I wonder if I should learn music theory from scratch, or go back to school or stick to a routine or go on a retreat in the woods to reconnect with nature idk help me please

Seek and Destroy ..No Mercy

Over the past few weeks, I’ve been trying to improve my metal guitar skills. I’m not necessarily a metal guitarist, but is this technically sounding good?

Beginner here! Looking for recommendations

Currently remembered I was gifted this guitar and amplifier a while ago. Left it for some days in a local music store to get into the best shape and just picked it up. I was wondering if anyone can quickly review or give some insight towards the gear I have and also recommend good YouTube channels to start from 0.

Any response is greatly appreciated!

Did I Make a Mistake Getting an Ibanez RG421EX as my First Electric Guitar?

Hey, everyone! I am pretty new to guitar. Currently, I only have about 1 month of guitar under my belt. In that time, I have mostly played on acoustic. About a week ago, I bought an Ibanez RG421EX as my first electric. Did I bite off more than I can chew? I notice that when I play it, my strumming hand seems to hover over the first pickup. I also notice that my strumming hand has to curl inward to reach the strings, possibly because I am holding the guitar as I would an acoustic.

All in all, I’m not having the best time with the guitar. I am noticing that I seem to prefer the sound of acoustic, so I was considering possibly trading it in for a Taylor GS Mini. I could just be running away from my problems, because the new electric world scares me a bit. I appreciate any and all advice you may have!

Rock Guitar Help

I’ve been playing consistently for around 3 months now and i’m looking at personally buying my next guitar with my own money. I’m currently on your basic beginner squier strat playing mostly blues and want to switch it up/upgrade. So, I’m looking for any recommendations and/or information on basically the polar opposite type of guitar. I’m talking locking tremolo, dive bombs, fast licks, crazy technique stuff. I’ve looked at ibanez and evh and a couple have caught my eye but Id like to hear from people more experienced than I. My criteria are it must look good, last a while, have a locking tremolo bridge, and under $1k preferably like ~$700 give or take. Huge thank you for anyone deciding to help out

Edit: *I MADE A NEW POST* go check it out i narrowed it down to 3 choices and have considered all of your guys feedback thanks a ton!

What guitar is this and what strings would be best for it if tuned to C standard?

I bought this guitar from a local store, it was labeled ‘Squier Telecaster’ and nothing else. As far as the electronics go, it works just fine. I believe it’s a 2004 Squier Tele Custom II, but I mostly want to know that as using distortion gave me a muddy, overall bad tone and I want to know what the pickups are made to play (distortion is a Behringer OD300 and amp is a Fender Frontman 15G that work perfectly fine on my HSS Squier Strat which I have played Acid Bath, Deftones, and System Of A Down in with no issue, if that matters). Also, I want to keep this guitar tuned around C♯-C Standard and Drop B. I’m thinking of getting 12-56 strings for that purpose but the 11-54 I have right now make fret buzz and have really high action starting around the 12th fret if I adjust the truss rod. Is any of what I’m trying to do possible on this guitar or is there adjustments I might need to make so it is possible?

TLDR: What guitar is this and what strings do I need to play it in C Standard tuning with minimal fret buzz and low action?

Started guitar 5 days back, I learned the basic chords but I am having so much trouble switching chords

so I started learning guitar by myself like 5 days back. I used the app guitartuna to learn most of the things and I learned the basic chords and finally got my callouses on my finger tips, but I’m find it very hard to switch chords in time, I just tend to look and that messes up the timing when I’m trying to learn simple songs and when I don’t look and change my finger placement is so messed up. Especially like switching from D to G or from any chord to C, C is like the most difficult chord for me. Is there any other way to improve switching chords, pleasee help me.

A barre chord tip that helped me as a beginner

I’m in my fourth month of learning guitar, and barre chords were giving me mostly buzzing and dead notes. I’m still learning, but these few things have helped me get clean chords much more consistently:

1. Slightly roll your index finger onto its bony side.
This applies to all barre chord shapes. Instead of pressing with the flat, fleshy part of your finger, roll it slightly toward the harder side. You don’t need an exact 45-degree angle, just what feels natural.

2. Pay attention to which strings actually need the barre.
Your index finger will still lie across all the strings, but it doesn’t need equal pressure on every string. Position it so you get good pressure on the strings that actually need to sound from the barre.

For example, in an E-shape major barre chord, your other fingers already fret the A, D, and G strings. The barre needs to make the low E, B, and high E strings ring clearly. I found that sliding my index slightly higher, with the fingertip extending a little past the fretboard, helps me get much cleaner notes on those three strings.

Think of it this way: the strings that are open in the original open-chord shape are the important ones your index needs to fret when you turn that shape into a barre chord.

Also, keep your index close behind the fret rather than in the middle of the fret.
I’m learning on acoustic, so the heavier strings make barre chords a little harder. I still get buzzing sometimes, especially during transitions, but these adjustments have improved my success rate a lot.
Now I’m working on smoother transitions between power chords and different barre chord shapes.
Hope this helps another beginner fighting the buzz.

8 months in. This was the song that made me quit the first time around, but now that I have the fundamentals (somewhat) down, it’s going a lot better!
