Earning $120-145k in Sydney but still feeling poor. How do people actually build wealth here?

I’ve been in Australia for about three years(very grateful on how beautiful it is and how there are so many pubs to drink so many different beers) and make around $130–150k a year. I don’t have PR yet, and as a single person renting close to the city, I still feel surprisingly poor despite earning what I think is decent salary. In fact I would say my rent isn’t too bad for the location. It’s not the best apartment but the convenience is okay.

But when I look at properties I’d actually want to live in long-term that could have potential decent capital growth, I’m looking at around at least $2m. That just seems incredibly far away no matter what I do. Probably need $400k in income and $500k in deposit. I also invest in stocks on the side. I’m financially very savvy. I’ve averaged around 30% YoY over the last three years ( pure luck rather than expecting that to continue) and have managed to build a portfolio of around $90k.

So I know I’m not doing terribly bad and am grateful. But whenever I think about wealth, owning a decent home, having financial security, and reaching the point where money genuinely gives you freedom, I can’t think of ill ever each there. It feels like I can work harder, earn more, save and invest, but the next level keeps moving further away.

Sometimes,it makes me question whether staying in Australia long-term makes financial sense. Non-financially, I do like the life out here. It’s just great. But the fact that I’ll just be average Joe despite being financially savvy in terms of wealth hits me always.

When will it go away.

So basically on a Friday night after 3 AM, I reckon after 12-15 drinks, I decided to go to another bar on an uber with 2 random guys.

All of us weren’t let in so we decided to leave. My phone died. As I was in the train station, I was just asking charger so I could charge my phone to get a cab.

So there was this girl who asked me for $20 after I initially asked a charger. I said fine I’ll give it to you once I charge my phone. I tried finding the charger with her going nearby but couldn’t. Apparently I found out that She was on ice and homeless. She insisted for the cash. I was like fine I’ll give it to you once I go home. She came with me. As soon as we got out of the train, she said $50 which I said fine. As we reach the house, she said $100. I wasn’t as drunk by the time I was home and realized how much of a mistake this was. I just wanted her to go away. I’ve never felt so scared inside my own home. She was on ice and I’ve heard people could be dangerous. She was gibberish, strange. During that hour, she smoked her drug, I got more scared. I didn’t want to trigger her anything so I went out took the cash out, and sweetly asked her to leave and got an uber for her. I still get paranoid on what if she shows up randomly or something. The anxiety has been killing me. It’s almost a week and still there. What do I do?
