Today’s Haul

You guys…someone needs to take my wallet away from me. I have no clean dishes. No laundry for work tomorrow. But I have a truck full of new plants so it’s 🤙

- Japanese Maple (Acer palmatum var. dissectum “Crimson Queen”)
- Hardy Hibiscus (Hibiscus moscheutos “Midnight Marvel” & “Starry Starry Night”)
- Sweet Potato (Ipomoea batatas “Black Heart” & “Sidekick Bronze”)
- New Guinea Impatiens (Imaptiens hawkeri “Fuchsia Cream”)
- Silver Rex Begonia (Begonia rex-cultorum)

The only ones that didn’t list a specific variety were the begonias, anyone have an idea? Bonus pics of my partner hard at work designing my huge garden bow that the trees are gone! The goth garden will be on the side nearest the driveway, berry patch on the opposite half, with a fountain in between. The orchard will be up front by the road, and the shade garden & greenhouse in the backyard. I don’t think I realized how big my yard was until we started physically mapping this out 😅

ID on this cutting?

My mother in law was given this cutting, supposedly Chinese Evergreen, and gave it to me. Not sure the ID is correct though, can anyone confirm / correct? She said she’s had it in water for about two months and just has these small roots forming, zone 8a (if that matters)

So we’re having some VERY large trees removed from my yard tomorrow, but structural reasons. A lot of stress, a lot of money we don’t have, but the silver lining is I will have a LOT more room and sunlight to work with, so I’m looking to give my potted berry bushes a permanent patch when all is said and done. I currently have the following, and though it’s ambitious, I want to incorporate room for expansion. Currently planning to section the front yard off into an “orchard,” “goth garden (black/dark foliage),” and a berry patch. Currently I have:

- Raspberries: Meeker Red, Anne Yellow, Wild Black, & Mysore
- Blackberries: Wild, & Snowbank White
- Hybrid Brambles: Loganberry, & Boysenberry
- Blueberries: Cabernet Splash, & Pink Lemonade
- Goji Berries
- Issai Hardy Kiwi
- Elderberries: John’s, Adams (both American Black), & Black Tower (European Black)
- Strawberries: Everbearing, Ornamental Red-Flowered, & Wild
- Wineberry (purchased as a “Heritage Red Raspberry,” and realized after some time that was not correct, so I will likely keep this potted to mitigate spreading)

Zone 8a. I’m aware I need to be conscious of the cold weather for the Mysore raspberries, and of the fact that red and black raspberries may have some issues if they’re too close together. Any advice before they’re planted in-ground would be appreciated!!

Will be relocating and planting most things in-ground in the coming weeks; some of these are annuals and won’t be permanent in the goth garden, but the plan is to get an elegant little garden bench, cover the ground in black mulch, and arrange everything nicely. My wishlist currently includes a purple leaf plum tree, a Japanese maple, a black lace elderberry, and a midnight marvel hibiscus. What other additions do you suggest? I’m really looking to build the perfect dark visual aesthetic here! Zone 8a

Pictured:

- Sambucus nigra ‘Black Tower’

- Heuchera hybrid

- Cordyline australis

- Strobilanthes dyerianus

- Tradescantia pallida

- Ipomoea batatas ‘Black Heart’

- Prunus persica ‘Bonfire”

- Sempervivum hybrid ‘Maroon Mountain’ and other varieties

- Hydrangea macrophylla ‘Eclipse’

- Celosia argentea ‘Plumosa’
