How do you politely decline to refer unqualified candidates

So I've been working at my company for a few years now and once in a while someone from my uni will reach out over linkedin or find my work email and ask for a referral.

I know the job market is tough and the university grads are getting desperate but they are literally asking me to refer them to senior roles.

If I see an alum from my school ask for internship or new grad roles I will submit a referral but its getting out of hand as they are asking me to refer for like ML engineer because they've done a few project.

Do you just ghost or write a polite response that you are not suited for this role.

Was I disrespectful for asking her age

So I 29M I have a friend who is trying to set me up with her friends. She told me that one of her coworkers have a friend that thinks I'm cute and wants to set us up.

I know that the coworker is around 36/37 so I assume their friend is in a similar age group. I responded to the friend with "Can I ask if the friend is similar age as your coworker" and she was a bit mad with her response basically calling me out for not appreciating her for trying to set us up.

I don't know how to approach this. I prefer dating women around my age so like 26-32.

How can I ask a woman's age without being disrespectful.

Third party recruiter setting up a call and never calls

Hi sub,

I've had quite a few third party recruiters reach out to me over linkedin for the past few months, set up a time for a call and never calls and ghosts. They work for large recruiting firms so think of like selby jennings, insight global etc so they are legit recruiters.

Usually they send me a direct linkedin message, say that my profile is impressive and would like to set up a call with to discuss a role for their client. I set up a call for 15 min for the next day and before the call they ask for my resume. I send over my resume over linkedin and the next day I never get a call or hear anything back.

I am wondering if this is happening to other people and if it is normal? I doubt they sent my resume to hiring manager before even calling and asking about compensation or telling me the role details.

It's been happening at least once a month so I am starting to think its just a way for these recruiters to collect resumes but I can't think of any scams.

Is there a strategy to keep a job posting up for a long time

I saw a few job postings from companies where its been active for multiple months.

I even interviewed for a few large companies like that and got rejected, but the same job posting is being reposted multiple times in the past few months. I know its for the same team I interviewed for because of the job description and the team that interviewed me told me they are the only stakeholder for that product/service.

At this point I know they didn't hire anybody so why keep interviewing and not hiring. It seems like its a waste of resources. Each round I complete is costing the company hundreds of dollars. A SDE manager is like 150$ an hour and two/three engineers is easily 300-500$ per round.

Recruiter is asking me on my current job search updates

Hi sub,

I interviewed with this company about 2 weeks ago and the recruiter reached out to me saying they still haven't made a decision yet and the hiring manager is on vacation.

They also asked me if there are any updates on my end with regards to my job search.

Should I bluff and say I have interviews scheduled with other companies but this role I interviewed for is my top choice or should I just say no updates.

I'm hoping that bluffing can make the employer speed up their process. I am currently employed so it's not like I have no leverage but this role that I interviewed for does pay about 30% more so I hope I get it.

Recruiter reached out about not having made a decision yet, good or bad

I interviewed for an SDE role 2 weeks ago and I thought the interview went well. We even stayed a few minutes after the interview just to talk about life and random AI related stuff. The interview team did tell me that they are hiring multiple positions for the role and might take 2-3 weeks to make a decision.

1 week after my interview, the recruiter reached out to me to update me on my status saying they haven't finished interviews and are still interviewing this week. Keep in mind I did not reach out to the recruiter at all so I was pleasantly surprised with the professionalism and consideration to the candidate.

Now it's been another week and still haven't heard anything yet. Is this a bad sign? Could I be considered as a backup plan now in case their top candidate have not accepted the offer or is currently going through background check? Or its more like they will hand out all of the offers at once since they are hiring multiple positions for the same role.

In-person frontend onsite experience

Hi sub,

I got invited to an in person onsite interview and I am wondering if anyone has actually done it. I've done onsites before but they were all virtual and never had experience with in person.

For the role that I am doing onsite for, it is a frontend interview so I am wondering how it will look like for an in person interview.

Never done an in person interview for a SDE role before so I am curious what the experience is like.

Outlook for pure frontend engineering in the upcoming years

Hi sub,

I am currently a fullstack engineer with 4 yoe and I do about 30% frontend and 70% backend. I've been looking to change roles for a raise and so far the only companies that got back to me are for roles that are more frontend focused.

For example the job posting is fullstack/sde but the job description would be frontend and the recruiter call will clarify its mostly frontend and some understanding of backend.

What does the sub think about taking a pure frontend role. Will it be hard to pivot back to fullstack/backend. Will AI affect frontend or backend more.

I'm comfortable at my current compensation but I am a bit underpaid for 4yoe. The jobs posting that are reaching back to me pay about 30-40k more and I am not sure if I should interview with them if pivoting to pure frontend will hinder my career.

I would love to hear about your thoughts.
