Impossible renting situation
Hi everyone, I’m trying to move out of a house I’m renting with three other tenants. The lease we signed was not for four separate rooms but for the house as a whole, so all four of us are on the same lease. Our original lease was 12 months fixed term and has now transitioned to a month by month system. I realize in retrospect that I should’ve never signed this lease, so please don’t comment on this.
I am obligated to find a replacement tenant to sign onto a new lease as the other three dont want to move. If i can’t, I’m aware that I’d have to pay double rent at my old place and my new place. Finding a new tenant would be fine except my prior roommates have impossible standards I need to meet. It must be someone they know and are comfortable with, so no strangers, someone whos willing to live at the location (which is not ideal as its quite far from our school), and someone whos able to afford the new rent (which is very high). Ive found two people, neither of whom the other 3 are comfortable with, and they wont allow me to post my room listing on any sites that could attract strangers.
I want to move because I am extremely uncomfortable in the old situation. Me and the otehr three have had large fights resulting in me walking on eggshells around them and being apprehensive of any further interaction. But at this rate it seems like I’m being pidgeonholed into staying. I’ve also found a 3 bedroom apartment for the 3 of them to move to as well as offered to help them move, but they don’t want to move either.
My parents are threatening to take them to court which I don’t want as our program is small and taking them to court might be social suicide for me.
What should I do?
