Dead 9800x3d with Asrock B850 Riptide
Hey all, just figured I’d add my experience of dead 9800x3d to help others out with info.
Built an asrock b850 riptide wifi with an AMD 9800x3d CPU in around February 2025. I kept the original 1.0 BIOS almost the entire time until late August 2026 when my CPU died.
I would get intermittent issues where I’d have to hard shutdown my PC and restart after being in sleep mode so it would POST correctly (it would just stay on red cpu light and orange DRAM), or sometimes a restart wouldn’t POST, etc. Other than that, the pc seemed to run fine for the most part.
Then I eventually got around to wanting to look into why it was doing that, and fix the issue so I updated the AMD chipset drivers in early August and then the next time I turned off my computer, it wouldn’t POST. I cycled power 100 times and did all sorts of diagnostics, including flashing the bios to the newest version, and it started working (or at least I thought). A couple days later, I couldn’t start my PC after a restart. Motherboard would get past the red cpu light and orange DRAM lights, but then go straight to green BOOT light and never get video output. No POST white light. This is when I gave up and RMA’d my CPU, as well as ordered a new motherboard (Gigabyte x870 aorus elite wifi7 for those wondering).
TLDR -
ASRock B850 Riptide killed my 9800x3d. Issue was during boot, motherboard light would go straight to green BOOT light and never progress any further, no video output, etc. RMA took about 1 full week start to finish, I was very quick to respond to emails and I’m located in southeast (they sent replacement from AMD Miami). No lasting issues since new motherboard/cpu, but I turned off sleep mode and will not use that anymore after I got spooked from new motherboard not waking from sleep one time.
