Lost Lake

Here we have a nice little 2 3/8's inch Lost Lake found in Wayne Co. NC by a Mr. Gobin back in the middle 1980's. It's made from a beautiful piece of Green speckled Rhyolite, and has some wicked beveling, accompanied by a very heavily ground base!!! I acquired this one, with the Bolen Extended Notch, from Mr. Gobin's grandson Michael.

If'n I Fits I Ships!

I still have no idea how he crammed his big a$$ in such a little box, but here we are 🤦‍♂️

And I still haven't figured out where he wants to go 🤔

Last pic is for size reference. He weighs, as of yesterday, 20.5 pounds at just under 2 years old!

Something You Don't See Everyday in NC!!!

As the post title states, here's one you don't see everyday. Not in NC anyway! This Bolen Extended Notch was found in Sampson Co. NC, by a Mr. Gobin in the 1970's. It comes in at 1 3/4 inches long, and is made from another rare find from NC, Coastal Plains Chert! I'm assuming that both the point and the material originated in SC, since both can be found there with more frequency, and migrated up to NC! I acquired this one from Mr. Gobbin's grandson, Michael. Great little example of a super rare point for the area!

Little SmokeDaddy!!!

This one might be smaller than most of my other examples, but what she lacks in size she more than makes up for in quality! Found in Mercer Co. Illinois by Mr. Jim Baker.

It's an outstanding specimen hands down! The craftsmanship is phenomenal!!!

What Does A First Stage Hardin Look Like You May Ask?

I recently acquired this outstanding example of an early/first stage Hardin from a very good friend of mine, and fellow member of the sub, u/morethanWun. I often get questions about how I know a point has been resharpened, and then I get to explain the process. This Hardin had only seen one or two resharpenings before it was lost, and therefore, doesn't exhibit the steep bevels you normally see on the type since finding them in such an early stage of use is rare. This is a good example of what Hardins look like when they're first born, for lack of a better analogy, lol!

Now, to the point. It was found in Lincoln Co. Missouri and comes in at 3 5/8 inches long, made from a beautiful piece of tanish Burlington Chert.

The blade is wide, lacks bevels, and is covered with deposits. It exhibits a heavily ground base and stem, and has a beautiful, high gloss, polished, film of patina, as well as phenomenal form. It's definitely a center piece for any collection for sure!

The Barbiest Barbs That Ever Barbed!!!

This Monster of a Barbed Hardin comes out of Wayne Co. MO. It's made from a beautifully polished piece of Burlington Chert, and comes in at 3 inches long. It boasts the longest, intact, Barbs of any point in my collection! This is a textbook example of what a true "Barbed" Hardin looks like. Lots of folks don't realize that there are 4 different variations of the Hardin point type, The Classic, The Barbed, The Knobbed, and The Hardove (aka: The Southern Hardin). Most will refer to any and all as a "Barbed Hardin" but this one really is one. You can see all the stuff you hope to find on a legit artifact in these pics, great patina, loads of deposits, and outstanding form! Just a really nice example of the type in my humble opinion.

That Flaking Though!!!

Here's a nice little Semi-Translucent, 2 7/16th's inch, type 2 Scottsbluff out of Illinois! It's exhibits outstanding collateral flaking patterns, get deposits and patina, and amazing form! The size was reduced by several resharpenings, but it still looks great in the frame! 😁

As Promised!!!

I told u/hamilton18889 that I would post this smoker of a Southern Hardin from Alabama! This thing comes in at 2 ⅞'s inches long and was recovered from Butler Co. Alabamy! Other than one little fleabite on one ear, it is a perfect example of the type! Great form, covered with mineral deposits and a sweet patina! Killer bevels, heavily ground stem and base, all the belks and whistles! I have no idea what the material is, but its gorgeous in hand!

Florida Banger!!!

Just got this one in yesterday! This Florida Hardin From Hamilton Co, Near Jasper Florida, comes in at 2 1/8 inches long. It's made from a beautiful piece of River stained Coastal Plains Chert! These Hardin variants are amongst the sexiest in form, in my humble opinion! The way the base flares out and rounds just really blows my skirt up! Lol! This is an outstanding example of the type! Exhibiting steep bevels, heavy creek stained patina, and other than a slight, ancient fleabite on one barb, no other damage. The tip was rounded from use.

*Having an example from GA on the way, and having acquired this one, I am now but only 2 states away from completing the second phase of my project! 😁

Jaw Dropper!!!

This absolutely outstanding example comes in a 3 5/16ths inches long, and was found in St.Louis Missouri. It's was part of the very well known Bruce Filbrant collection. It exhibits all anyone would want to see in an ancient relic. Wonder film of patina, visible mineral deposits, phenomenal form, heavy grinding of the stem and base, perfect Barbs,( less a small fleabite on one), and great size! The fact it was part of Mr. Filbrant's collection just adds to the provenance of this superb specimen!!!

Scottsbluff

Heres a sweet little example of a Scotty from St.Louis Co. Missouri. It's not the best I've ever seen, but I love the form and craftsmanship all the same!!! It comes in at 2 9/16ths inches long, is very well made, and has everything you want to see in an authentic point. Great patina with mineral deposits, great form, the works!

Michigan Madness!!!

As many of you know, I've been working on a 3 phase Hardin frame project. Phase 1 was to acquire at least 100 examples, and get them squeezed into one large frame. ✅️

The second was to acquire at least one example from every state they're primarily found in, and phase 3 is to replace the lesser quality points with better examples over time. Phase 1 has been complete for a while now, and phase 3 has been in perpetual motion since the project began. Phase 2 hit a proverbial wall with 5 states to go, MI, GA, FL, SC, and NC.

Well, yesterday, I got one step closer to meeting my phase 2 goal! I can now check, one of the hardest states to acquire a Hardin from, Michigan, off the list in a very big way!

This First/Very early, stage, monster comes in at 3 5/8's inches long, and a whopping 2 5/16's inches at the widest point! It's made from a beautiful glossy piece of Onondoga Chert, and has beautiful form! Just a truly incredible example of a first stage Hardin!!! It's, by far, the widest example I have to date!

Gotta Love A Nice Piece Of Avon! (Part 4 of 4)

My 4th and final Avon Chert Hardin was also found by Preston Althoff on his family's farm in Adams Co. Illinois!

It's 2 1/2 inches long, and has great form with incredibly steep bevels! There's a little bit of ancient damage on the tip, but otherwise its a great example of a colorful Knobbed Hardin!!!

Gotta Love A Nice Piece Of Avon! (Part 3 of 4)

Got this one from a friend of mine a while back. It's a bit different from the last 2 I posted, but Avon none the less. It was recovered from Pike Co. Illinois. It comes in at 2 7/8's inches, and has all the bells and whistles! Great beveling, mineral deposits all over both faces, nice patina, Semi-Translucent Chalcedony inclusions, and great form!

It looks like 1 barb is broken off, but it was actually worked off during the resharpening process!

Very Nice, colorful point 🤘😫

Gotta Love A Nice Piece Of Avon! (Part 2 of 4)

The second of this 4 part series is this gorgeous Classic Hardin that was found in Peoria Co. Illinois! I call this one the "Dragon's Eye" Hardin because of the eye shaped inclusion on one face! The material is high grade, colorful, blue and white Avon Chert and the piece measures out at 2 5/8's inches long. It has everything you want to see in an Authentic point of this age, and is extremely well made! Very eye catching piece to say the least! 😁

Gotta Love A Nice Piece Of Avon!!! (Part 1 of 4)

This amazing Avon Chert Hardin was found in Adams Co. Illinois by Preston Althoff on his family farm. It comes in at 2 7/16's inches long, and exhibits a high glossy polished patina, has numerous mineral deposits, and the craftsmanship is just breathtakingly beautiful! It has nice steep beveling, and beautiful overall form. This is gem grade Avon that is Semi-Translucent through out. This is one of 4 Avon Chert examples I have in my collection, and each one is unique in both material quality and distinctive appearance, but all are very well made points. I'll be posting the other 3 points as part of this series. All 4 are Hardins of course, lol!

(I do have a few non-hardin points to post too, but they'll have to wait a bit 😁)

Crescent Quarry Sweetness!!!

This gorgeous, Semi-Translucent, Crescent Quarry Hardin was part of the late Dan Bauer collection. It was recovered in Calhoun Co. It is papered by Ken Partian.
