Shoes for El Chaltén & El Calafate in mid October

Heading to Patagonia for the first time in mid-October. Spending time doing day hikes in the El Chaltén and El Calafate area across 6 days (part of a broader 12 week trip with a 55L backpack across Peru, other parts of Argentina, Colombia, Guatemala and Mexico).

Have a purchase/packing dilemma on shoes though...Feel comfortable to forego boots but unsure between trail runners or hiking shoes (or both?) for Patagonia. Seen so many mixed opinions!

Curious what people’s thoughts were around waterproof shoes at this time of year specifically?

Is snowmelt something I need to be worried about underfoot?

Are goretex shoes actually counterproductive given time it might take to dry? Better to go with merino wool socks and breathable non-waterproof shoes?
