Shen Jiu is NOT an "Irredeemable" character
Listen, if you want piece-of-shit irredeemable SJ, that's fine but I hate seeing the monthly posts (reddit, tumblr, bsky, wherever else) high horsing some take like "If you cannot like your fave for the actual character that they are you don't like them at all" and then SJ gets mentioned.
First, SJ factually has tried to help people even when it didn't benefit him, and even when things got worse for him because he helped. He helped their fellow slave kid, he saved LQG when they were disciples even tho LQG thought he tried to kill him, he spared QHT's life, he hoped YQY wouldn't come save him when he was taken by LBH. These are all canon from the extras.
Second, SY is a hella biased and unreliable narrator. We DON'T KNOW if SJ was really a lecher or not. But we KNOW from the first chapters that NYY was close to him and he treated her well, there are evidences that being around men makes him uncomfortable, and SJ was a virgin. I don't wanna hear a damn thing about SY's narration about SJ coz he clearly doesn't know shit about him. Didn't even know his backstory.
Third, the ONLY actual (unwarranted) crime SJ did and we KNOW is his abuse of LBH. The whole story revolves around this fact. He could have treated the other disciple badly too and created a bad atmosphere at QJP sure, but bfr if you've read other xianxia, this isn't the worst thing ever, and it doesn't make a character "irredeemable". His view and attitude towards LBH COULD be irredeemable, as to the very end SJ didn't regret what he did to him. But to say he's a completely irredeemable piece of shit is totally false.
The great thing about SVSSS and SJ is that there's so much to be said that we can interpret however we want. If YOU want evil, selfish, hates everyone SJ, sure. Go for it. But don't shame and pick a fight with other fans who choose to see the GOOD sides of SJ that are canonically there and whine that they don't actually like his "actual" character. This is the essence of this post.
Hot take: Fans SHOULD be able to take what they like from a character they love and do whatever with it. That doesn't mean a damn thing to how "real" something is. It's all fiction. Don't moral police or high-horse how fans are supposed to enjoy a character. If you don't like someone's view of SJ then just block them instead of polluting the SJ feed/tag. To me, it's the difference of CREATING something for a character you love vs wanting ppl who you don't agree with to STOP. I don't care if you think it would be soooo much more interesting if ppl actually wrote SJ to be more of an asshole. Get over yourselves. Actual creators are getting discouraged because of you and that makes ME irritated.
