Under the radar album of the year contenders?
Mine: Storefront Church - Blue Movie
It’s a synth-driven, art pop record but that doesn’t really cover all of it. There are some noisier moments (Heaven or Los Angeles), some dancier moments (Pictures of Her Debit Card), some tender moments (Wilhelmina, my favorite track overall), lots of good humor (Fatal Attraction).
The vocals are full of this sorta psychotic, off-kilter charm. The production sounds great and the sequencing is immaculate.
Probably my favorite of the year so far.
And once you’ve checked this one out go back and listen to his last record Ink & Oil, which is also amazing but completely different. That’s a huge, orchestral art pop record à la Leonard Cohen, Scott Walker, Nick Cave, etc.
