The Mouchon "Le Sphinx"

It operates via an automatic squeeze-action mechanism. Squeezing the lighter snaps the cap open and strikes the flint simultaneously to spark the flame.

Origin & Patent: The mechanism was patented in France by inventors Robert and René Mouchon between 1930 and 1931.

Manufacturer Markings: Authentic models feature an impressed manufacturer's mark reading "Mouchon Le Sphinx Made in France."

Licensing: Because the design was highly effective, the mechanism was licensed to other premium brands of the era. Most notably, the prominent French manufacturer Quercia used the Mouchon license to create their famous "Racer" lighter in 1933.

The Karl Wieden 655 with windbreak

The Karl Wieden 655 with windbreak (KW) is a brand dating back to the 1930s from a German manufacturer distinguished for its superior engineering capabilities during the mid-20th century. When a model is specified "with windbreak," it indicates the retractable or fixed metal shield (chimney) enveloping the wick. This feature was designed to shield the flame from wind-induced extinction, thereby making it a "trench" style or outdoor-friendly lighter.
