DIY sailboat restoration

Between 2018 and 2023, my wife and I spent about 9000 hours of our time, completely restoring our 50 foot sailboat. We did all the work ourselves, pouring in everything we had into the project. We are happy with the result and today are living aboard while we sail the boat around the world. Feel free to ask questions :)

Edit: Wow! thank you for the overwhelmingly positive comments here everyone. It is very humbling. If anyone wants to see more photos of our project, if you scroll down on our instagram page @trim.sailing, you will see progress posts as we were building the boat in real time.

DIY 50 foot yacht restoration (Before & After)

My wife and I spent three years fully restoring our sailboat, pouring in countless hours of hard work. Living in camper beside the boat in a boatyard on the Chesapeake Bay, USA, we replaced just about everything but the hull.

We used Sapele Mahogany for the majority of the interior joinery as well as some structural elements like the 17 laminated deck beams, bulwarks and the strip construction rudder. All of the white surfaces are rolled and tipped Meranti marine ply and the saloon table is Australian Red Cedar. We rebuilt every aspect of the boat, from the rig to the keel and everything in between.

We took on more than we ever imagined but the result was worth every drop of blood, sweat, and tears. Here’s a glimpse of what we accomplished.

Edit: thank you for the overwhelmingly uplifting comments everyone. We are very humbled by everyone’s kind words. For those of you who would like to see more photos of the rebuild, we documented it over the years on our instagram account @trim.sailing

An Old Boat, a Dream & a lot of Hard Work….

My wife and I spent three years fully restoring our sailboat, pouring in countless hours of hard work. With a tent as our workshop, we lived in a trailer beside the boat in a boatyard on the Chesapeake Bay, Virginia, USA. We replaced just about everything but the hull.

We took on more than we ever imagined but the result was worth every drop of blood, sweat, and tears. Since launching the boat we have sailed halfway around the world. Here’s a glimpse of what we accomplished

Real world sailing experience

Hi all,
My wife, Agata, and I (Alex) are long-term liveaboard sailors. Over the past 10 years, we’ve sailed our Del Rey 50 from the Mediterranean to Australia, including a major refit in the US.
We’re now about to set off on the next chapter of our voyage as we slowly circumnavigate.
I’d love to hear from anyone dreaming of buying their own boat who wants to gain some real hands-on cruising experience by joining us for a passage or part of our journey.
If that sounds like you, feel free to reach out. Happy to share more about our plans and what life aboard is really like.
