Why is eBay forcing refunds into gift cards? This was never the policy before

I’m an occasional eBay buyer, and I’m honestly stunned by what I just discovered. During a recent return, eBay defaulted my refund to an eBay gift card instead of sending it back to my original payment method. Yes, there’s an option buried in the process to change it — but the fact that the default is a gift card is completely wrong practice.

As consumers, we expect refunds to go back to the original payment method. That’s basic. If I pay with PayPal, the refund goes back to PayPal. If I pay with a credit card, the refund goes back to my credit card. That’s how it has always worked. But now, unless you manually catch and change it, eBay will redirect your refund into a gift card — locking your money inside their platform.

This isn’t a small change. It’s a major shift that eBay never clearly told buyers about. From what I’ve learned, this started after eBay switched to its Managed Payments system around 2021–2022. But instead of being transparent, they quietly flipped the default to something that benefits them, not the buyer.

This feels deceptive. It feels like a trap. And buyers deserve to know exactly what eBay is doing with their refunds.
