I have this kangaroo-leather hat which I use a couple of times per year mostly for sun protection on festivals, but I have also worn it at the sea or on boats.
I store it in a breathable, uncoated fabric bag in a cupboard where I also keep my clothing.

I usually clean it with saddle soap, which originally is intended for leather horse saddles, which I also use to clean and protect my leather shoes. The saddle soap does not only clean, but also protects the leather.

Btw. my cupboards are mold free and there is also no smell. I always sleep with the windows open and open all windows wide at least twice a day.

Despite all of that the hat regularly develops this white rash and I don't know if it is mold or just, e.g., salt.

I have already once soaked it completely in a bucket of water for a longer time in an attempt to wash out any potential salt, from the sea air or sweat. But the white stuff is still coming back.

Any insights, identification or hints?
