3rd Year Courses for CPEN - Will I survive?!?!?

Hey upper year/graduated CPEN students! Below is what I plan to take in my third year. I found it hard to figure out my courses because a lot of them were reserved for 4th year students and a lot of the CPSC courses were reserved for CPSC students.

Anyways...here is my plan for a hardware focused 3rd and 4th year:

Term 1:

CPEN 331 - Operating systems
CPSC 320 - Intermediate DSA
CPEN 321 - SWE
CPEN 311 - :(
APSC 377 - Nukes and stuff

(this seems like hell)

Term 2:

CPEN 391 - 6 credit demon
MATH 307 - Applied linear algebruh
ELEC 315 OR MATH 340 - depends if I get off the waitlist for 315
EOSC 114 - Natural disasters
PHIL 220 - Online, symbolic logic

And then my prospective 4th year would be something like:

CPEN 491 - 10 credit capstone all year

Term 1:
CPEN 411 - Computer architecture
ELEC 402 - Intro VLSI
APSC 261 - Tech and society
MATH 340 (or ELEC 315, depends on third year)

Term 2:

CPEN 412 - Microcomputer systems design
CPEN 432 - Real-time system design
ELEC 403 - Advanced VLSI
APSC 450 - Professional engineering stuff

Note**: I'll probably take APSC 261 and APSC 450 during co-op if I get one after third year lol

To me, this looks brutal, but I'd love some insight. I totally see the appeal of extending my degree by a year now.

Cyber Operator Inquiry as a Computer Engineering student

Hey everyone,

I just finished up my second year at UBC in the computer engineering program. As I get closer to graduation I am heavily considering what I want to experience and do for the rest of my life haha.

The software job market is really dire right now, but I was wondering what the career of a cyber operator in the forces is like? It’s actually been my dream to serve in the CAF (as an infanteer haha) but through social pressure, my good grades, and my privilege I ended up in an engineering degree.

I’m just curious about the competitiveness, especially now with AI sweeping the job market, the type of work (what a typical day looks like), and the career building opportunities that go along with it (advanced training, transferable skills into the private sector or other government agencies like CSE or CSIS). Also, do cyber operators ever deploy? To me, that would be very exciting. Also, are there are similar commissioned or NCM trades that would be great for a CPEN graduate.

Who love some insight! Thank you very much for your time.

LeetCode Pattern Recognition and “Post AI” Interviews

How do you currently track which patterns you’ve actually internalized vs. which ones you solved once and forgot? How do you target specific patterns for different roles?

Also, how have you guys noticed the difference in SWE interviews (a grand total of 2 haha). As a CPEN student, all of my interviews haven’t actually had any LeetCode, it’s been mostly higher level design questions and getting grilled on design decisions of my personal projects.

Seeking hiking/camping groups or carpools (UBC student, no car)

Hey everyone,

I really love hiking and camping, and my goal is to get out to the mountains more this coming September. I’ll be starting my third year at UBC and will be living on campus. Unfortunately, that means I won't have access to a car.

Are there any local Vancouver hiking clubs, groups, or regular carpool circles I could join? I’m decently fit and have done some 9-12 hour day hikes but I need help with the logistics of getting to trail heads lol

I’d be more than happy to pitch in for gas and any organizing fees. I’d love to make friends outside of my university bubble and have epic weekend trips to look forward to rather than just endless coursework.
Any recommendations for non-university clubs or groups that are welcoming to car-less hikers?

Thanks!

Outdoor Clubs (hiking and camping)

Hey guys,

I really love hiking and camping but this coming September (my third year) I will be living on campus and won’t have access to a car. I was just wondering if there are any clubs where I could participate in group hikes or camping trips for a fee? I’d love to make more friends outside of my major and have stuff to look forward to rather than just endless homework.

Thanks!

Can't find CPEN 320/322 (Software Construction II) on Workday? (2026)

Hey guys,

I am going into my third year of CPEN and I want to take CPEN 321 but it requires you to take CPEN 320 as a co-req, however, the course doesn't seem to be listed on Workday for T1 or T2. Is this just a me issue, or has anyone else noticed this?

I appreciate any insight, thanks!
